U.S. Peavey Club

Greetings all!

I picked up an '82 T-20 a couple of months ago and noticed that the the SF pickup is loose when I flip the bass topside down. If I shake the bass sideways, the pickup rattles.

Is this normal? Are there supposed to be springs on the screw shafts or something?

Thanks

I don't think this is normal. I don't own a T-20 for a direct comparison. Personally I would cut up an old T-shirt or something and fold it up behind the pickup. The rest of humanity would do something a little more legit to hold the pickups secure.

Just received this '87 Dyna bass today. $250 on eBay. Just gave it a good cleaning, a new set of strings, and a good setup. Sounds great on my small combo amp at home. I'll play it at band practice tomorrow and see how it sounds, but I think it will cut through very well.

The pics are from the eBay ad.

It's in really good condition. One chip in the paint near the neck pocket, the rest of the finish is in good shape. Some rusty screws, I'll probably replace them when I get time. The previous owner must not have liked the narrow string spacing. The spacing is adjustable, and it was adjusted so the B & G strings were nearly off the edge of the neck. I moved it back to where it should be. Luckily I like narrow string spacing since I'm used to playing 6 string basses. The B is a little floppy, it probably needs a heavier gauge string, especially since my band tunes down 1/2 step.

Chances are the pickup has let loose from the cover. Remove it (carefully) and hot glue it back together. The check that it has the springs

Floppy strings also can be from poor quality - there are a few brands people swoon over on this forum that I've learned are not physically balanced.

String retainer helps too

I thought about going for that dyna long and hard, but it just seemed like too much rust for me to handle, didn;t want to risk possibly having to deal with rusted pots (bad experience!).

Also some brands of strings lose tension with age, replacing them will do you a world of good! :D

The pots are fine. I put new strings on it. They are Dunlop and I haven't used them before (they were on sale), so maybe the B is just floppy on them.

I like the bass a lot. The rusted screws shouldn't be that big an issue, I'm sure I can find replacements. Here in Hawaii you see a lot of guitars and basses with rusted screws....

Picked up an older Foundation 5 with Peavey labeled Super Ferrites......

Sadly, the neck had a weird hump around the 12th fret area.
I don't think the truss was working as it should....as I couldn't dial it out.
Only went so far, as I didn't want to damage it......

I was surprised, since it's a 2 piece neck......the rock solid type.......

Too bad, it sounded pretty good.....

haha, i exaggerated a bit, it was more of a "you stand out so much in the mix it shames the rest of us" versus sitting nicely in the mix like my current gigger and making a nice live sound that is well rounded, versus kicking major butt liek my SF powered Patriot does.

That's the reason I like them. I play in a band with two loud distorted guitars, and it is hard not to get completely lost in the mix.

Been my week to spot old Peavey's for sale.

One really bad refinish on a Fury at a local music store, one unmarked Grind 4 at a pawn shop and a fairly nice Peavey Fury (late '80's, early 90's) on clearance for 89.00 at the same shop.

That last one had me tempted. Red with maple; pretty much like the I've got stripped out in the garage.

Finally got the special truss rod wrench for the Patriot. Oh man strung BEAD this baby is excellent. Best B string I've heard, with the super ferrite pickups it just gets grindy and punchy on the B and I love it. Actual definition on the B, with no flab or boom, very tight sound. Also the super hot output definitely helps, I had way too much fun with this thing today absolutely blasting the crap out of my home amp rig.
