There was also a Forum AX with two massive VFL pickups and an ABM bridge. The body came in both alder and swamp ash. Wider nut (about 1 5/8 inches). Great bass with tons of tone, but on the heavy side (the metal alone is probably half of the weight). I had one for awhile but sold it since I have a couple of the 5 string versions. I should have kept it.

So I got the B-Ninety neck I ordered today, pretty nice. It's about the same as the neck on my Patriot ('custom' painted headstock style) except it is wider at the nut than the Patriot. Thin and fast the way I like it. Was concerned about the tuners, being the small gotoh-type, in practice they seem solid, not as good as Grover Titans, but good enough. Almost a perfect match for the body I put it on, and it plays great.

Were these necks made from a different type of wood? My Patriot's neck (an '87 I believe) is clearly maple, but the B-Ninety neck is kind of darker, more muted brownish color. Anyways I'm still waiting on a battery box to finish the project, but when I switch it to passive it sounds great. I'll post some pictures tomorrow when I have the chance, I'm quite pleased with this neck overall.

Also I think the neck is much better off with me now, judging from the paint marks on the heel, the bass this neck came off of was...HOT PINK. Ew.

The new TL-Five arrived today. On the whole everything seems to be working okay with it. That had to have been the HIGHEST ACTION I've ever seen on a bass!! Was totally unplayable for the most part for me the way it was.. But I plugged it up and checked everything out. There was a lot of noise from the volume, blend and tone pots..

Took it out to my work shop and basically took it completely apart. Took off the old strings. Removed the bridge and took out the saddles, removed the tuning keys and cleaned and polished all of them.

I cleaned the fretboard and gave it a BIG dose of boiled linseed oil. It was pretty dry. There was NO discernable fret wear! I masked off the pickups and took some Meguiar's Scratch X 2.0 to take care of the few finish scratches on the body. The body actually wasn't in bad shape, mainly around the volume and blend knobs. Afterward I used a clean cloth and used Meguiar's Ultimate Quik Wax to polish her up to a smooth, mirror-like finish.

Took off the control cavity cover and removed the preamp just enough to get access to the pots and basically DROWNED them and the input jack in contact cleaner.

Unfortunately I didn't have a fresh set of strings to put on it (thought I did, dang it!). Will have to get a set tomorrow. But after I got it put back together I did plug it in and the knobs were dead silent after their bath.

Cant wait to get some new strings on it. Will have to set the action and intonation on it but I'm thinking it's gonna be almost like brand new!

This is where it gets funky - some of the obscure models were more like production prototypes and marketing tests

Part of the reason i dont waste time with the serial number trivia game is it's irrelevance - it's also a factory time waster

There was an era where CNCable and artistic alterations could be special ordered

The passive and active forums should have been named different as gave divergent vibes and have different compressionish and "q" sound

Pbass? Wow that's a tough one.... I have 50s pbasses on my gear list.... I can't tell you the number of times recording producers are kind of let down when I walk in with an early milestone (yes import) tuned bead...barts....tapewounds...and pass filters

A passive forum will tend to sound more traditional... Vflish will sound more hifi.... Basses like the axcellerator and active forum tend to fit halfway between cirrus and passive fender

Welcome to the club- please don't be offended if we rained on your parade

As a collective group were more of the buy the bass you really want vs dropping 400 into a 150 bass - there are a few of us that have hundreds dropped into garage sale basses that will acknowledge they're still unsung heroes

I've put an original badass on a USA peavey - only change was the deficit in my bank account - the original hardware was specifically tested and selected for form,fit,function,and profit

To the best of my knowledge direct retrofit replacements are hit and miss...things like bridges are more miss

There are a few stunning refinished ones on the board .... I'm still waiting to see a mahogany foundation high glossed (like a lespaul custom shop)

I've missed a few Axcellerators lately, so I focused on finally getting a Forum & a Patriot.
Also appreciate the interesting info on the Forum variants. I feel lucky to have found the passive P/J version. With a little work, it may be one of my favorites.

Thanks, I'm over to look at again today. I feel pretty sure that I can pick it up for $80. The neck is in Great shape, the body has 4 places where you cab see the wood. The bridge is fine, so I 'll prolly leave it be and just refinish the body. Not sure about the pups yet. I think it will be a fun project.

I was surprised (pleasantly so) with the stock pup on my Fury. Sounds KILLER!!

By comparison, the B-Ninety I bought that had the stock pups replaced with Duncans sounds terrible! I've recently purchased a 1989 USA model Fury pup that I'm gonna drop in it. Anyone have an old USA model bridge position Jazz pup for sale?

If I can get to sound half as good as my stock Fury sounds I'll be a happy man!
