Yep, it's painted. Acts like polyurethane. Seems to be tough as nails. I don't see any wear under the strings on mine but I don't use enough pressure for the strings to hit the fret board.
We could call them the Fury Black Beauty.

Two "new" additions.
I was in a Pawn Shop on Tuesday (not even looking for a basses) and I saw a beauty '94 Foundation. Good neck, electronics, Super Ferrites, and not a scratch on it. Came with a Peavey Bullet case (still lined), a tuner and a strap. Walked out with it for $100. The body is different than my '86 - it's more of a slab and less contoured. Sounds great.
The other addition seems to be everyone's favorite: A '91 RJ-IV (purchased off TB classifieds) - this bass has seen a lot of stage time since it arrived. My son and his bandmates love it and they use it at their gigs. Has quickly become one of my favorites.

yes, my '93 foundy is definitely a slab ... from what i can tell the changed started happening around 91 ...

question: how "common" are the RJ-IVs? i don't see them pop up on eBay very often. and, at least since i've been aware of them, have not seen them pop up in any of the local shops.
there is one sound sample on YouTube that i can find. it's enough to make me really want one.
my attitude, having played a couple of old 80's Peaveys, is that i'd be happy if i scored any one of them (Fury, Patriot, Foundation, Dyna). they're all fine basses.

RJ IV is not that common and folks that have them tend to like and keep them. Dyna or RJ IV would be my choice because of the preamp and the flexibility it gives. The RJ IV also has a "secret" dip switch on the pcb that lets you change the voicing of the preamp.
Nice score. I'd love to have a grey one. Never really cared for the other colors but they all sound great.
edit: Nice rig, too.

there's that pink-burst RJ-IV that pops in the Google image search. i'm usually way not into that kind of thing. but for an RJ-IV, i'd make a very happy exception. it really doesn't look half bad.
Thanks, Mech. Also, the Hipshot D-tuner is another cool feature on the RJ-IV. It gets used a lot.
You won't find an RJ-IV in a local shop. But they do pop up here and on ebay now and again. You'll go several months without seeing one, and all of a sudden 3 of them will be on ebay. You just have to keep looking.
That pink RJ-IV on ebay is laughably overpriced. This just sold last month.

Overpriced but looks in great condition, nice chunk of wood and no signs of wear on the frets. Looks like the owners manual was preserved in a printer till right before the pics were taken.

Wow what a closet queen, that one is clean as they come. The case looks brand new, too. No reason the owners manual wouldn't be like new as well.
To each their own but why anyone would bid that high on any T-40 is beyond me. Will be interesting to see where the final bid lands, and if the bass mysteriously gets "relisted due to non-paying [DEL]shill[/DEL] bidder".

Yes, something isn't right about that auction. Anyone with a shred of sense could check the completed auction and see that basses like that were selling for 1/3rd of what that bass went for.

I've heard mention of a "design flaw", but no one has ever been able to elaborate...wanna take a shot at it? I'd love to know some details.
