Nice score. The neck through section looks like it's darker than the original pic would lead you to believe. I use mineral oil on my Koa TL-5. Rub it on, let it sit a little and buff it off.

I don't know of another battery box of that size, although if you find one, please post it here. I move the battery to the pre-amp pocket when the battery box is broken. Plenty of room, just use some foam for insulation and to keep it from moving. The wires will need to be detached and resoldered.

Super nice bass. Can't tell about the wood, though. It looks like a koa neck with walnut wings, but that would be pretty unique. I owned a koa Peavey bass, and it had a satin finish.



You won't find a replacement battery box. Shame, because I've only seen one Peavey bass where that box wasn't broken. The best solution is to make a plate for it out of a sheet of polypropylene. Remove the plastic ring and use it as a pattern to locate the holes.

I recently got a Sarzo with no box at all - it was covered by a piece of duct tape. I called Peavey - you can get the box but no cover. That looks like what you got. I made a square cover out of some 1 ply PG material I had based on the hole pattern and added some foam. Real easy fix.

Well, I've posted this on here before but I just can't get over how killer this bass sounds. These old signature Peaveys just have some magic to them!

Just in this morning - '91 Koa Unity! New strings, a setup and I couldn't put it down for an hour. Sounds and plays great. a couple of very minor things not unexpected for a bass this age - a high fret and a bit of ski jump at the neck end. Both easily filed and forgotten. Needs a truss rod cover - Chandler sells one for $10.

When I downloaded Peavey's manual they show the Koa Unity with exposed pole piece pickups. I didn't realize the EMG's on it were stock (there's a battery holder in the compartment). I am liking it a lot and can't wait to gig it!

took the high tension flats off of my fender jazz to ease the tension on the neck, so now that "el cheapo" fury i bought is now my #1 player . . . i should probably just throw a bill lawrence p46 in it, and call it a day :P

Yup, it's formerly a Mill+ J/J. I owned one of this same kind before and it sounded really good so I figured this one would as well, but it didn't. It sounded okay with rounds but I play flats and it was both muffled and hissy. I thought it was the preamp and sold that off - only to find that it was the pups.

The pickups I have in it now are SGD Neo's and it sounds really good! I have it running passive with a series/single/parallel switch for each pickup and V/V/T controls. I also have a push/pull volume to switch between standard series and G&L style OMG mode.

Other than the pickup routes the other mod I had to do was to drill a channel for a bridge ground wire. These basses don't normally have one apparently.

I might eventually put an Audere preamp into it, but it does sound really good as is, so I might leave it that way.

OK, so I finally did the sensible thing and e-mailed a few pix to Peavey Customer Service. According to them, it's a Koa Dyna Bass Unity in natural satin finish, shipped from the factory in June of 1990, Peavey item # 00090600.

BTW, I e-mailed Peavey at around 11:30 last night and received a response (from a real human being!) before 9:00 a.m. today. To get that kind of support on a 23 year-old bass is pretty awesome. Way to go, Peavey!

A question about the Koa Unity basses. I played one a friend had some years back and it is the reason I have my Dyna Unity now. The sound and feel had me hooked in an instant. However, the Koa was extremely light weight.....and beautiful..... and my back would love it but, it really had "neck dive" problems. Is this an issue with all the Koa Unitys and how do you compensate for it? Yeah, I want one of these too. Thanks!

Got my Peavey BQuad yesterday. I didn't time or enthusiasm to clean it, change the strings, etc, so I did all that today.

This bass is INSANE. It is so easy to play slap on and has a tight, punchy, mean growl to it. Very low action. It sounds like a Cirrus from the 23rd century, or for you horror fans from Jason, to Jason X.

I have a Koa Dyna Unity, and there is no dive issue at all. That may be entirely due to the wide straps I tend to use.

I have a question regarding your passive Unity:
If you get a chance to look inside the control cavity, can you tell me how its wired?

The reason why I ask is that both the P and the J on mine have the green & white wires clipped and taped to each other.

I started to get curious because the J output was very, very, low so before I raised the pickup, I thought I'd see what was going on under the hood.

Those cut wires have made me curious. They might be reserved for the Active models, but I don't know.
