I'm looking for some ideas folks.

While back I got a Foundation body from Peavey UK and then later a T 40 neck,it fits like a glove.
I'm now waiting on a super ferrite pup but the seller only had one so I'm coming up short.They
don't seem to come up for sale too often.

Can anybody recommend another pup to compliment the SF ?

for me, because the SFs sound so good, I wouldn't try using some other pickup. I would put it together as is and fashion some sort of cover to put over the birdge pickup route. then in the meantime just play it with one pickup until another SF pops up.

I wouldn't do anything permanent to the routes, but maybe a scpb pup in the neck position until another SF comes along?

I wasn't planning on altering the routs but I see we have some controversy

dedpool favours the neck while wild4cars the bridge with a single coil in the neck

I'll go with the one pickup until another SF comes along, I was concerned changing the pups would change the
character of the bass,and I don't want that to happen.

for the bridge p'up cover, i would use the four existing holes for the pickup surround. that way there's no unnecessary screw holes to mess up the finish on your bass. I wasn't saying anything about altering the pickup route.

Its definitely a personal preference which position you tend to favor. Personally, I like the clarity of the bridge soloed and probably would do the reverse of dedpool's idea were it my bass. Depends on what you'll be using the bass for, I suppose.

The Foundation neck is 21 fret and the T-40 is 20 fret so the bridge will have to be moved to make up for the 12th fret on the T-40 neck being closer to the end of the neck by one fret. Should be about .600"/15.24mm (distance between 20th and 21st frets) toward the butt of the body. This is a rough estimate since I don't have a T-40 neck to measure the distance from the last fret to the end of the neck.

When buying a single SF to be paired with another care must be taken. On the basses with two single coil Super Ferrites, the pickups are magnetically out of phase and are wired electrically out of phase (coils are wound the same) to form an in phase humbucker when both are on. In order to have a pair you will have to find a pickup that is magnetically out of phase to the one you have. A compass can be used to determine if pickups are the same or opposite magnetic polarity. The compass will point South to the top of a North PU and North to the top of a South PU.

One physical tell-tale is that black and ground will be soldered together on one and red and ground will be soldered together on the other.

No problems with the bridge position Mech, it was measured up weeks ago. The woodwork's the easy
part for me on every build, I'm a carpenter so the usual hitches like lack of tools don't apply.

Thanks for the info on the pickups,I was just going to copy the wiring on my other Foundations or either
the T 20 or Patriot if using the one pickup.

Make a dummy PU and ring out of one piece of wood and paint it black for your empty position. No one will know.

to add to what mech said, if you radius the top of the dummy pickup, you could use it as a ramp.

Hi Family !!
Here is my new creation. I took my parts and built this and it turned out WAY better than I ever imagined it would.
I took a 1980's Peavey Foundation all maple neck and put it onto a 1990's Peavey Foundation with VFL soapbar pickups.
I also changed the strap buttons to Dunlop strap locks, and changed the hideous chrome knobs to classic black numbered knobs like on the old Foundations.
I put on new strings, did a killer set up thanks to the patented Peavey neck angle screw on the back. The action is low and the pickups are growly and DEAD SILENT like Cirrus pickups, only passive ! The tone is warm around the edges like passive should be.
I can play YYZ so easily on this bass ! I LOVE this bass !!!

Thanks Runnerman ! Of course I LOVE the Super Ferrites. They sound spectacular and I've always thought the Foundation with SF's gave Rickenbacker 4001 and 4003's a run for their money.

I don't miss the single coil hum.

I would describe the VFL's as more "sophisticated" sounding. More refined. Definitely studio and stage ready. Just dead silent and killer tone. Just like the active version, the passive VFL's bring out the best sound and harmonics of all aspects of the bass and player. Every string sounds even. There is also a lot of growl ! I would assume it is a combination of both passive and pickup placement.

I still find it crazy, for a lack of a better word, that Peavey basses and their electronics can be bought for literally pennies on the dollar compared to the competition and in my opinion BEATS the competition nearly all the time. OK, ALL the time from my experience so far.

I've never really played bass (and the few times I did try to play it was g-d awful and thankfully short-lived), so I have no idea what I'm getting in to with this. Regardless, I am now the owner of a beat to snot well-loved '90-something Peavey Dyna Unity in koa. Do you guys hand out member numbers to newbies? I hope you don't require a sound cloud clip for verification. :***:

ETA: It's the active version; the EQ knobs are a little...iffy. The treble has a center detent and feels good, the mid feels gritty and the bass knob is hard to turn, has no detent and part of the cap is missing. What have I done?!

They make a product called Deoxit contact cleaner that I have used on dirty pots. However, if memory serves, the preamp in dyna basses are circuitboard bound, so accessing the pots may be some hassle. You likely have an amazing bass that just needs some love to get back up and running. I would take it to a tech if I were you, but I'm not the most competent at repairs myself, so your mileage may vary. Welcome to the world of bass!
