U.S. Peavey Club

As sacrilege as it is, I'm not 100% in love with the finish on this mahogany Foundation. Anyone sand these bodies before? Suggestions as to any refinish - some sort of gun oil finish or... ?
Ya know....I was looking at that and trying to figure out if that might be a poplar/maple body that used to be painted and was stripped and then stained. Mahogany ones don't usually have the big difference in color between the pieces....at least the ones I've seen. I know there was a guy on here about a year or so ago that refinned his mahogany....go back and do a search, and I believe he used an oil finish. That might even be the original finish on those.

Is there any way to take a better picture, perhaps of the back of that Foundation with maybe a better close up on the grain?

Do the necks on the 80’s Foundations and Patriots have profiles similar the the 1st generation Fury? They look kind of similar. Slight taper, flat neck, wide fretboard?
At least as far as nut width, no and yes. First Gen Fury is a P-bass style. Foundation is more like a Jazz bass. Patriot is very similar (perhaps identical) to the First Gen Fury.

At the end of the T-40 post linked in my sig you'll see nut and heel specs for the basses you mentioned. By the measures listed, 1st Gen Fury and Patriot might be identical necks.

Maybe I was that guy. I refinished mine about two and a half years back:

U.S. Peavey Club

I just sanded and re-oiled. I think I used Watsons Teak Oil at the time, and that turned out well enough. Since then I have learned more about oils and I think any of the "_____ oil" you find in a home improvement store is probably a mix of boiled linseed oil and varninsh. Anyway, were I to do it today I would probably use pure polymerized tung oil. It is very easy to apply, you can get different sheens, and if you don't like it you can just put another finish over top.

I do agree, the wood on your Patriot looks different than your Foundation so maybe that is some other wood. Mahogany has a pretty open grain and your foundation looks smoother and less reddish.

Here are a couple of more pics of the refinish. Sanded and ready to apply the oil:

I attached these images pretty large so you can get an idea on the grain. I would say the color on those is pretty close too if that helps.

I have never played a Fury or Foundation but I can say the Patriot has a very skinny nut. No wider than a Jazz. You can see it in an old post here:

U.S. Peavey Club
My Patriot is not skinny like a jazz. Mine is at least a 1.625” or probably closer to 1.65” nut width, which is 70s to modern P bass width. My Foundations feel like Geddy Lee Jazz basses: 1.5” (or even slightly less) wide.

Scratching my head here. I just measured mine to be sure and it is just a hair under 1.5". I had no idea they changed the nut width on Patriots!

We learn something every day! I also had no idea there were both P and J style Patriot necks.

Based on Jeff's measurements, my suspicion is that they went from using Fury necks on the patriot to using Foundation necks. Again referring to the link in my sig, it lists Foundation nut width as 1.48 and yet heel marks (within margin of error) are all about the same across all 3 models and several others.

Coincidentally, just this morning I bought my first bass, and my first Peavey (well, that wasn't an amp ;).)
It's an older Milestone II, off white w/ rosewood. Though I've always been a guitar player rather than a bassist, so far I'm having a blast with it !
But, turns out I'm missing the big screw in one of the tuners, and have been hunting around hoping to find either the screw and washer, or just another whole tuner (hoping someone has one gathering dust in their parts drawer).
Here's a pic of both the new-to-me bass, and the tuners I need one of......

Additional info to your post in the other thread. It's metric,it's M4 x 10 and it's definitely not hollow.

Later Forums,Foundations and Furys used Korean parts. These are the tuners on my late 94 Foundation.

Thanks guys! And Kodiak, I was gonna message you this a.m. that I'd removed one of the screws last night and found out it wasn't hollow, as I'd thought. So, thanks again for the good info.
Meanwhile, you guys think my guitar's had some body/neck juggling done to it? That kinda makes sense, as I'd called Peavey inc. yesterday looking for some basic info the I couldn't find on-line ( i.e. what wood is the body made of, confirming the board was rosewood, years and country of manufacture, even asked about the tuner screw).
But, when I gave the guy the serial number, he said that was more numbers than he thought a Milestone II should have (IIRC, he said it should be 5 digits, while mine has a 7 digit number on the neck plate).
edit: that being said, I've been looking at another guy's pic of his Milestone, and I can't tell any difference in the bodies (for what that's worth!)

Milestones, like all East Asian Peaveys, were produced by different factories.

Not only did those factories use different serial number systems, they also had different production systems. Some would all be built in-house,others sourced parts then assembled. Example of this would be my Fury II,neck has 1 serial number/neck plate has a different number. Strangely it's the same deal on my BXP Cirrus

BTW I've no idea who you spoke to but he should quit manning the phones. I've 8 digits on Korean and Indonesian Peaveys but Chinese and Vietnamese start with 5 characters then 6 numbers. You've got 7 digits yet he's saying 5 ??
