Are VFL pickups active only or can you use an active/passive setup with them? Im assuming active only. Any help would be great. Thanks

I kinda thought not. I really like the shape, if I ever get around to building again I guess I'll just make my own.
I would like to join. Koa Dynabass with active EMG's installed. Playing at the House of Blues Orlando 2 weeks ago.
I have a hunch they're internally active -- I've never known one to be setup without the preamp.
Maybe someone that's done the Millenium conversion on a Gbass can comment if they put the leads directly to the output jack.
It's known that a few of the Koa neck through "unities" were slightly more tempormental in environmental changes (humidity etc).. this lesson learned helped with the USA Cirrus natural finishes.

It's rare to find an early Mahogany or Koa Peavey in great shape.. they get beaten around the Gstring (body).. the company was not suggesting an oil maintennce.. many of them look like beaten lumber.
As a gamble, I'd be looking more toward the finished unities.. unfortunately perfect Unity LTD basses are commonly going for $800-1200 now.. not the $200 they were 18 months back.. perioidically you'll find a Dyna Standard for around $250 or so.
Check the pickups.. for some reason there are failures on the pickups(the ones with pole pieces rumoured to be Schallers).. you can cop the RJ tone by installing passive EMGs.. preamp should be fine.. I've never known of a worn out failure
When checking out unities.. look closely around the 12 fret.. if they were incorrectly stored or treated poorly.. they'll get a bump/ridge where teh body meets the neck.. this really can't be fixed (cheap)

kinda new around here - been lurking for a few weeks. still catching up on these monster threads you guys have going on.
currently attempting to revive my 93 Foundation 4. originally fire truck red, rosewood fingerboard, maple neck. super ferrites. bought brand new with peavey leaflet tag still on the g tuner, around x-mas of 93.
currently, unfinished (became a project piece when i stumbled upon a 85 performer for $300 back in 96) ... fretless, and i just put the pickups back in last weekend. and seriously mangled the wiring.
i'm looking into building a small tool kit, and definitely going to refret it. that's my next step. as soon as that is done, i'm taking it to get it rewired, pots replaced, and hopefully find a cavity cover for it. (anyone suggest someone in the dayton / cinci area?)
as for finish, my best friend and dude i work with is apprenticing as a tattoo artist, and im considering just giving it to him, and might just let him have at it. i would probably clear it when done. I was praying that it had nice grain when i stripped it, but when the red turned mauve and bubbled off, it was really ugly. one of those "so THAT'S why they painted this one" moments.
this is defiantly my second favorite bass to play, in 25 years of playing off and on. I won't go into my seller's remorse over the Performer here ... just know it took one hell of a bass to put this foundation in the #2 slot.
so, have any of you refretted one of these yourself? any tips?

I know how you feel, i was so happy when i found a GV recently. Needs a little work but everything is in great shape so im happy. The color is awesome as well. I thought it was just black flake but its like a gunmetal color with flake.

The VFL pickups have definitely internally active. They have the extra wire for the 18V power.
Yeah, thats what i figured after taking the bass apart. I went with the active only setup anyway simply because i wasnt all that concerned about the passive option.

Was the D-tuner an option on the RJ-IV?

I know its all torn down but i was told that if i didnt provide pics that it didnt exist so heres a pic. This one mainly shows off the fretboard which i think looks amazing. More to come once i replace the nut, rewire the electronics, put some new tuners on, and restring it.
Also, i know it looks black but its not. Unlike the true black ones the flake in it isnt as dominant (but its still very easy to see in person) and the color is a darker grey kind of like a gunmetal.
