What are some great basses, played by great bassists, that make them LOOK like they dont know what their doing.

Maybe stop and think that they aren't playing Fenders because they're amateurs, but because Fenders work? And that they want to focus more on the music and less on fussing about basses and amps and whatnot? I think it's something we can all look up to.

Pros use Fenders because they're the standard. It's not much of a job to achieve a good tone using one. They can focus more on musicianship rather than what their gear is doing.

I'm probably on the other side of the fence, when I see a bass player using a $$$$ custom bass with more than 5 strings and a top that looks like someone puked on it, I think they look like fools.

I don't know. I don't think that's a valid question/premise. No famous people will look like "noobs" playing any bass. The will only sound like "noobs" if they don't play well. Even pros use very inexpensive basses from time to time. Looks, brand, color, how high/low the bass is hung, etc... matters not in the whole scheme of things.

I probably earned more on one of my last gigs playing a bass that was given to me than someone who played a very nice Am Std. Fender bass at some smoky blues bar.
