To see if other people felt the same, or if there were any other great basses that make great musicians look not so great.
zeppelinfreak, i think the general opinion as a response to that question is that people dont feel that way about fender.
actually I hear alot of people tellng they play a good ol fender because thats what the older folks want to see. If you are playing in a blues club full of older people, or if you looking for a gig as a session player, you will probably encounter people who DONT take you seriously if you are NOT showing up with a fender!
there has always been a sort of attitude for alot of people where the fender bass IS what a bass is.... anything else is just a copy... and there are still people who feel that way. (though obviously it really ISNT true...)
to each their own though. not everybody likes the look of a fender, but I think it has little to do with how easy it is to find one in a music store..

I think I understand what OP was saying. When I was a young and cocky bassist gigging 3 nights a week I dreamed of boutique basses and only considered them as viable tools. I mean for heck sakes I was an artiste'. Then as I got older and got the chance to sample some expensive, custom, or what ever you want to call what you percieve as cool; I realized not all boutique are what they are cracked up to be. Old reliable basses sounded good, did not suffer from weird electrical ailments from all their custom EQ's or magic switches. I think theres a reason alot of seasoned bassesand guitarist reach for fender. BTW I do not own a fender, but I played some magical ones that made me sound like I knew what I was doing.

Im not judging the bassists capabilities on the bass. Just their appearance.
But I guess I forgot were living in 1984, and I cant state an honest opinion without the flame battalion coming after me.

It's all in the way you approached it, you'll learn.
BTW, what do you know about 1984 anyway?
If the bassist stinks, he stinks, no matter what bass he plays.
OTOH, a good bass can often make a better player sound better, and a worse player sound worse, because you can hear the mistakes better.

I really dont know much. I just read the book and liked it. And now whenever people act ghey about stuff, I go "Sorry, I didnt know we were living in 1984."

We got that- but we're saying the basis for your judgment is totally wack. The top professionals play a lot of different basses, but a huge percentage of them include Fenders in their roster. Some of them -even in modern music- are famous for their Fenders. Do they look like noobs to you? Apparently so.
BTW there's actually a difference between "being defensive" and "putting someone in their place". "Defensive" is when somebody can't admit they're wrong. "Putting you in your place" is when you are wrong.

but on topic... you're right that fender is the standard... but looking amateur is all about how you carry yourself, Pino is not an amateur...

What this is is a forum of (usually) open minded bass players of all shapes, sizes, colors, classes, genres, and musical persuasions, and as a whole we typically frown on people who not only express their ignorance on a subject with which we have knowledge or experience, but especially when they litter this forum with that ignorance.

If "everyone" missed the point, then the fault lays with you and your lack of clarity in trying to share whatever point it was you were trying to make.
Words mean things. Simply form your thought and point a little more before you commit to sharing your concept with others.
That has nothing to do with anything. Fender gets dissed here plenty...only it's generally done with more intelligence.
There are two types of bass players.
Those who play Fenders.
And those who wished they played Fenders.

To add to that: A lot of us here do play exclusively Fenders, or at least have a Fender as our main axe. What your original post inferred, to me at least, was that you'd deem me an amateur because of what I play, an not what i can do with it.
Then again, I guess that Jaco, Victor Bailey, Jamerson, Sting, Matt Freeman, Marcus Miller, John Paul Jones, Geddy Lee, Reggie Hamilton, Roscoe Beck and Stu Hamm (amongst many many more) are pretty damn amateurish looking.
