This fret-less bass guitar was inspired and conceived in May, 1993, by Part III of The Fisherman's Chronicles ( Primus ). Les Claypool autographed the neck in 2000 after it's completion. There were over 1200 hours of labor invested into this work. At an Ultra light 6.5 pounds and a sleek 57" long, this is an amazingly beautiful and one of a kind instrument.

- Sturgeons scoots, body pattern, and tuner accents made of handcut Mother of Pearl from mussels which were saved by a dishwasher from the dinner plates of Folie Duece patrons
- Genuine Porsche Leather cushioned back, in black

- Purple Heart fingerboard
- Ironwood anchor
- Redwood Burl head stock
- Cocobolo bridge
- Driftwood nut

The pasted description of the bass was revised by the artist shortly after listing. He did a lot better at describing it than me for obvious reasons. Didn't think I did too bad for not being a bassist or eBay seller- but glad he got over his anti eBayness to finally give it a just description. I am sure all this is still worthless to some of you naysayers though.

it maybe doesn't sound very dedicated to you, but after $70000 goes to income taxes, $16500 in sales tax, plus all listing and paypal fees, plus my 25% when the artist subtracts for materials, he is not getting what he should in many peoples opinions.
Plus, you must have missed that Nathan is a very dedicated volunteer who donates about 30 hours a week to our cause. If you are more dedicated, good for you, but I somehow doubt it.

I can't find an EIN for the group searching the IRS's tax exempt database online for state: california and keyword: 'fence'. Given the original maker's close ties to the group, how is this not to be viewed as an attempt to con people by literally using sad images of puppies?
edit: there is a match as mentioned below for state Florida. I apologize if my post discouraged anyone that was about to bid 200,000 for this brokered (not donated) bass.

grovest- Why do peoe work so hard to trash others? please provide the website you searched this. I would like to see a website that exists where the irs lists every tax exempt corporation. If you read carefully that is an additional fee and process on top of the $800 ($750 when I Paid). I have actually stated LOTS of taxes are going to be paid, which if Nathan donated the item to us, and many other possible loopholes- we would keep the 86000 or so in taxes that are going to be paid.
Sorry, that bass/art is not very appealing to me. My wife would kick my ass if I brought home that odd piece of art/instrument. Where oh where is the Mothman, when we need it? Please let us know if somebody actually buys this piece of art/bass. I'd like to know what I'm missing out on. Perhaps the art community views it differently than the bass community.
I don't know what's funnier: the poor attempts of the lady to justify that exorbitant price or see the tb'ers trying to convince a person that is certainly unreasonable.
If some fool is willing to pay 180,000 dollars for that bass let em, a fool and his money will soon depart. If i had that UGLY bass and some rich snob would pay me that kind of money, why not? Rich people are not necessarily the brightest, but they sure have money to burn.

That is a nice bass above, but I guess your brain says that the production line style body with Ebony and gold leafing is all you got to compare. I guess I am unreasonable, But one point I will make before I depart- I will see thousands of bass guitars, I will forget all that I have seen on this website. But I bet you will never forget this bass. Whether you hate it or love it- And that is something that someone will want, an unforgetable, NON CONFORMED, beautiful peice.

Instead, set a starting bid of something much more reasonable, say $5,000 (and I am being generous), and set a reserve amount at the lowest possible value for the artist to make his materials cost back, and still have something for the charity, and then see what will happen.
If you did a fair auction, I doubt this would go for more than $1,500, to be honest.
Value is solely driven by the market. The artist is not known outside of Humboldt county. As such, anyone outside of Humboldt county is not going to value the bass at anything more than any other piece of Primus Memorabilia. I doubt ANYTHING that has been related back to Primus has gone for anything close to $200k, much less a bass that was made, not by a skilled and well-known luthier, but a relatively unknown artist.
I know that the People's Republic of Humboldt County has a hard time with basic capitalism, but that's how eBay operates. The market will determine the ultimate value, not the seller.
