artists name in title:

As everyone can see, or not see, Nathan has never created any web presence (and has actually been proud of this), so using his name in the most important tag line doesn't make sense. I carefully chose words that I felt would work best. I would value useful input. But his name, although it makes sense what your saying in a non robot indexed world, Les claypool is going to garner way more looks.

These days it is very common on eBay - for better or worse - for unique items to be listed with an "aspirational" buy it now price with the understanding the the seller is really feeling out the market with the or best offer mechanism. Many browsers (or old time eBay users that didn't notice the introduction of the obo option) see only the buy it now price and scoff, misunderstanding the seller's listing strategy.

From the photos, the fish "scale" along the front of the body look extremely impressive. The "Primus" in the listing title is fair game considering that the entire instrument was inspired by a Primus piece as described in the listing.

With that said, the extreme buy it now and the original giant fee paid outside of eBay do not convey a positive impression.

Edit: I apologize, I did not scrutinize the listing close enough before my post. In fact it doesn't have an OBO, which I assumed it did from the TB post about an offer for 23K. And the selling account has essentially zero feedback. If the artist is known locally, I'd suggest selling the instrument locally and avoid the ebay fees and extremely high risk that someone will fraudulently "win" it at 200K. My guess is you could probably find a wealthy pot baron to donate 20K to your org and in exchange get some really cool fish art for his music room.

So you used Les' credibility without any shred of evidence to validate it is actually his signature.

Jay, this is a public forum. You might not like what people have to say, but it's their right to post it. It's the same basic principal that allows you to post that fish-art-bass on eBay for $200k (or whatever it was up there for).

As far as misinformation, it's up to you to combat that by doing the proper research and knowing about the item YOU are selling. After 10-plus years of selling on eBay and here on TB, I have learned that it's MY responsibility to know what I'm selling.

And constructive criticism - if you want to sell something at a profit, and hope to donate 25% of it to charity; you should (A) sell an item with proven value - you want to sell it, yes? , and (B) be prepared for flack when people are insulted that you are donating a mere quarter of that profit. Over the years as a musician, my friends and I have done countless benefit shows. We donate our time. Even if the organizer tries to pay us, we refuse.

Oh, and it's tough all over out there, grow thick skin.

Good luck to you.

All I can say is that only closed minded people wojld assume Nathan will always be a nobody, because here in Humboldt County, CA he already is a somebody, and hasn't even tried. All famous names start out as nobody, and, if by chance, everyone who believes in this man turns out to be
right, then this guitar could be worth alot more. So... some people have balls. Some people take chances. Thats how things work, or we would still be primitive.

He built this in 1993, if he hasn't attained enough success by now to at least be known on this website to some degree, he is a nobody.

Do you realize where you are?

Do you honestly think his name is enough weight to command more than any other luthier before him has received? If he thinks time put in = money earned off a build he obviously hasn't built very many basses. I haven't built any but I have read enough lutheir's building threads to know that if you work out an hourly rate it is pennies on the dollar, this couldn't be more true for the small time guys.

This artist has been a dedicated volunteer. Not only has he donated his time almost everyday, he has donated his money as well. He thought he would never sell his sturgeon to anyone, and yet offered it to us.
We feel very special.

Not only do we know that Nathan will still volunteer 30 plus hours a week, he is willing to help us with the downpayment on a larger piece of land with matching funds, so you do not and need not know every detail. However we are happy to get this cash sum. I encourage you to donate something unique and creative that no one in the world has to a local nonprofit.

Maybe when this listing ends, we will send it to psacards to have authenticated, however it seems so pointless to us, as we would still list it for the same price even if it wasn't signed.

Our volunteers feel confident that we put a great value on this. WHEN Nathan has a name, there will only be one. I mean- if his life sized buddha carving has been valued at half what we're asking for the bass, which is a functional and way cooler object, then we will get what we want. It just may take time.

I remember a while back I saw a thread or something about Les selling a prototype pachyderm bass to help pay for the medical expenses for his nephew. It was a cool bass, used by Les, sold by Les, and the the price it got was nowhere near $200,000. If this guy could see that auction's results maybe he'll gain a tad bit of humility and re-list that monstrosity for a more realistic price.

Oh I see how it works. "Maybe" just maybe someday he will be "somebody" and then this hunk of poo poo will be worth something.

Someone should shell out a ton of dough because maybe this this fantasy will happen. I have a better idea. Why dont you keep this art/bass and kill Nathan. As you know Artists work sometimes become much more valuable after they pass on. That actually sounds more reasonable then what you just wrote.

I never called Nathan a luthier. I called him an artist. I understand I am on a bass forum, so maybe I will explain a logic in quick terms.

If an artist makes only one bass- it is a one of a kind.
If aluthier makes only one bass- they will be out of a job I guess if they do not make another.

To be able to make such a fabulous bass is a talent especially your first try and if you can't see that - well that sucks for you. I do not believe any of those famous names put forth something as outstanding as this their first time. Show me if they did. If their very first peice was this crazy beautiful then their bass' would be worth more.

"There's a sucker born every minute"

You'de have to be one heck of a sucker to buy that... I assist a luthier (mostly just for free to see how the whole process is done, I find it very interesting) and I can tell you, small luthiers work for pennies. There is no way some 20 year old bass made by a no name artist who "hasn't tried"... allegedly... signed by Les Claypool is going to bring 200 large. What type of pickup is in it? Is the bridge even adjustable to achieve proper intonation? Was the scale length calculated correctly? How's the neck angle? It doesn't matter if he built one bass, a sparkly, leather interior covered turd is still a turd. And this a huge turd. I thought the Jaco eBay bass was crazy; that ugly fish bass exceeds that and then some. However, "there is a sucker born every minute," best of luck finding that colossal sucker.

So, how can an "artist" be expected to make a bass? Is a Chef a car mechanic? So its a one of a kind. That makes it less valuable. No track record.

What is so fabulous about this? Show us? How can it "suck for us?" We have no proof. It sucks for YOU because you aren't intelligent enough to grasp anything we are saying.

Yeah I am sure all the great builders of our time never came close to building something of this quality.

Stop smoking crack.

Lol I don't know what is more hilarious

1.) The outrageous price of the bass (art...lol)
or
2.) the ebay seller trying to justify the price

This is funnier than most sitcoms on TV

Can it be played underwater?

He was actually only 17 when it was built, so a kid built a bass guitar that people in our community have placed a value on. I wish I had created something so awesome when I was young. I am sure that more negative remarks will come with the disclosure of his age, but some will put 2 + 2 together and figure out that of he did this as a "kid", he must have gotten a lot better. He has never felt the need to build a name, people who know him think he is nuts for not having a website. He still does not feel he needs one, however he does!

Wow 17. Now that is a bass builder with experience.

Who are these people in your community that feel they have the experience to judge the value of a bass built by a 17 year old kid with zero experience with a signature of Les Claypool that may or may not be legitimate?

Did they go to the same university as you?

If you had the money, which would you buy? That $250000 photo, or the "ugliest" bass you have ever seen? I bet someone someday will love this. And we will be using some of the funds to teach children to read! I have learned a little on how to post this next time. I will suggest to the artist to donate more. Who knows, maybe your negative feedback will be our double gain, that would be great to ask for 50%. Wish I would have started the first offer to him at that instead of 25%.

By the way, I will probably list it as more next time. Please keep talking about it.
