Okay, I don't think Geddy Lee is overrated. I do think some of the components on the more classical set up of his Jazz Basses are overrated. Like, the Badass II - that thing looks like it inflicts pain.

I think folks like Larry Knetchel and a few others from the 'Wrecking Crew' that barely get mentioned are underrated.

would you guys says that bass players that use alot of effects i.e chris wolstenholme (or however you spell it) from muse, are over-rated? i know some people say that bassists use effects to hide "the real bass playing" in the band.

I was really into muse at about the same time I started playing bass so Chris Wolstenholme was a pretty big influence on my early playing. His tone has changed a lot over their history, and his bass playing style isn't (completely) built off of his tone. He has crazy stamina (try playing that main bass part from New Born for 6 minutes!.. that's a finger workout for sure!) although I suppose any professional bassist is probably playing for 6-8 hours a day and has that kind of stamina...

All in all that is a very longwinded way to say I don't think Christ Wolstenholme is overrated....

In terms of underrated, I think James Jamerson is fairly underrated! Especially when you consider he only used one finger.

Though not underrated, 2 bass players immediately come to mind for me for being overlooked as bassist's, sting and Paul McCartney, both great players, but the general public usually can't tell between a bassist or guitar player...

edit: I almost forgot, gene Simmons, well he was great along time ago...
