Under-rated/Over-rated bass players....

Underrated - whoever I like. Overrated - whoever you like. 
Underrated- Karl Alvarez of the Descendants, All, Lemonheads. Roger Waters- even though Glimour recorded a lot of the well known tracks you can't take away what he's done live and on a lot of the early stuff like Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Overrated-Les Claypool. I used to love his playing now I just find it annoying. He went from innovative to played out IMO. The guy from Korn, although you don't hear about him as much. He used to piss me off when they were big.

I dunno. He doesn't really get to stretch out very much with Metallica, but his older stuff with Suicidal Tendencies was pretty good. He also gets bonus points from me for the support he's given the Pastorius family, and the time and money he spent getting Jaco's bass back.
over-rated: cliff burton. its not that i dont like him. i only like metallicas early stuff, but i still dont think hes as great as people say he is. his name is ALWAYS brought up when talking about metal bassits. bottom line; i think hes a little over rated even though he and mustaine are the only musicians i like from metallica.
under-rated: bobby sheehan. hes always been one of my favorite bass players, but i rarely meet other bass players who know who he is.

I agree on Dusty Hill, it's pretty much imposable for a power trio to be going string all of these years without a good bassist (or drummer, or guitarist for that matter).
With respect, I gotta disagree with these two. One is not because of Metallica and the other is despite them.
For Jason, I think anyone who's peeked inside the workings of Metallica could agree he was frequently being locked out of the songwriting process. It's why, when I heard he quit the band and why, I shouted, "Good for you, Jason!" Thus, "despite them".
For Robert, I, myself, have not heard much foaming-at-the-mouth over him, before or currently. What did impress me were two things. The first was a Youtube video I saw of him auditioning for Metallica, and why he was picked over others. The second was this incredibly energetic, super-cool improv jam he performed on Warwick's "Fuss on the Buss 2" alongside Steve Bailey with a fourth-quarter assist by P-Nut. ("…is not because of them.")

-Tom Araya in Slayer. Yeah, it's tough stuff but he's mixed out, and he almost strums when picking live

Tom Araya and Lemmy are only judged as bass players by bass players. When I used to see these bands in the 80's I wasn't thinking "Tom's tone is too mid forward. I wonder if that's the tone he has in his head?" No. I was thinking "Holy sh** it's SLAYER!!!!!! All Hail!!!" Same with Motörhead.
That aside, I think Paul Chambers is underrated, or at least not mentioned much. Bass on Top is an intense record.

I am greatly under-rated. Nobody says I am great. Maybe it's because I'm not gigging atm and only play in my studio , (awright,bedroom)

Under-rated..Rick Danko(the Band), Bill Wyman,and all the bassist that played with Frank Zappa..
Under-rated: Tom Scholz. Those Boston basslines are brilliant.
Over-rated: It hurts to say this, but Rudy Sarzo. He seems like a great human, and has talent - but so do thousands of bass players. What did he ever do that was special? With Ozzy, he played Bob Daisley's parts, and with Whitesnake, he played Neil Murray's parts. He does have nice hair, and looks good in videos.

Id say John Myung of Dream Theater is pretty much underrated among bassplayers and doesnt get much love in this forum. I mean the guy is a technical beast, hes tight and barely does mistakes at all, and for someone of that caliper he still acts very professional. He does what suits their music just perfect and never tries too show off and steal the show. Many other bassist with these tecnichal abilities are just way too busy tearing up the fretboard and showing off their fancy basssolo too boost their own egos.
As for the most overrated bassists, alot of famous guys that were lucky too meet a good band with a good songwriter who made em famous while their bass skills probly wouldnt get them into and music-academy
