While these bands aren't "Famous" yet the bassist for King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is pretty good. Check out the I'm in your mind fuzz and flying microtonal banana albums. Also check out Thee Oh Sees new album "Orc" the bass in it is pretty melodic

Bob Daisley's bass on Long Live Rock and Roll is really good - he's got stronger hands than me!

I love Daisley but he only played on three tracks on that album.

I may have missed it in someone else's post, Gene Simmons seems to get a bad rap, but his lines are excellent. He is one of the reasons I wanted a bass guitar.

I've seen KISS acouple times...Gene is Rock Solid IMHO !!!

Seconded on the Tina Weymouth call. She grooves hard and glues it all together.

-Paul Turner - My favorite of Jamiroquai's bass players. Most people think the band is just a dude in a hat on a treadmill.
-Graham Maby - Played with a number of famous artists/bands - Joe Jackson, They Might Be Giants, Natalie Merchant. His work on Live: Summer In The City with Joe Jackson is fantastic.
-Troy Sanders from Mastodon is a player I really dig.
-Mark Sandman of Morphine. Maybe not world famous, but well known in the MTV/Alternative scene prior to his death.
-Tim Commerford - I don't think the casual listener realizes how much he drives RATM's sound.

Leonard "Hub" Hubbard - The Roots

Ron Carter - Tribe Called Quest and other hip hop work (he got his credit for jazz)

Honorable mention for any famous Hammond organ player who plays the bass parts like Jimmy Smith or Richard "Groove" Holmes. Also an honorable mention to Noel Redding because I hear people trash his bass playing all the time.

Leon Wilkeson - Lynyrd Skynyrd. Listen to Sweet Home Alabama, Gime Three Steps, and Freebird. Stop the gag reflex and really listen to the bass parts. I'll bet 90% of the bassists here miss a LOT from these melodic bass lines.

I had to learn Gimme Three Steps for an old band I was in. It was much more difficult than I expected it to be.
