Love obscure blues players......I jammed with Scott Weis a few gigs, when i first moved to northeast PA back in early 2000's....blues hall of fame inductee in 2012 and Opened for Blues Traveler etc. Good friend and great player with about 6 cd's under his belt.

I, honestly, could go on for hours....More's the pity....

Son Seals was truly a great player and vastly underrated . I saw him from the time he first started touring [ at Speakeasy Pete's in central sq. Cambridge ] and he was unbelievably , good . He would wonder off in his solo's to the point that you'd think he'd never be able to make it back to the tune but he'd manage to do so every time in a very inventive way . I do believe he kinda peaked early in his playing skill - sort of plateau'd if you will but he was always very enjoyable even after all the trauma of his wife shooting him in his sleep - to losing a foot in his battle with diabetes . His singing ability was limited at first but as he aged he got better . I always felt like his first album was really a strong and fresh take on Chicago blues that showed great promise .
I would also recommend Johnny Rawls as a current performer - great showman and underrated talent - well , worth catching if you get the chance . He plays small clubs and often has very good players backing him up . He is in the soul / blues vein but a decent blues guitarist and very good singer - marvelous entertainer too . Danielle Nicole is another very good performer currently working - she is not strictly blues per se but does have a bluesy vibe and some very good tunes of her own ...... Kelly

Just about all black blues artist recorded on 78 rpm records are underrated.

This blues song ended up Voyager heading out into unknown space along with 26 other songs. Probably one of the most mournful, sad and blue songs ever.


I think the list of underrated blues artist is just toooooooo long. How about Leadbelly? (Led Zeppelin did a cover of this.)

Very good point. While I consider Johnny Winter to be as well-known and appreciated as Eric Clapton, he is apparently beyond the mental event horizon of the general public.

johnny winter was the first name that came to my mind as 'underrated'.
