Updated Southampton Fifth Gear

Maybe this isnt the right forum for this, but i figured id ask while were on the subject. What does phase inversion do and will it cause any problems? How common is it for a pedal to do that?

Won't cause any damage whatsoever. But, when you try to mix an inverted signal with it's non inverted clean or unaffected version (like in a blender) you can get a volume drop off. Most blenders have a switch to fix that. Pedals like the Fifth Gear v2 don't really lose low end at most settings, so it becomes less likely to be an issue since you probably won't be blending them with a clean signal. Even then however, you can fix it after the fact.

I'm here just to say how much I love my new Fifth Gear V2.:hyper:

I've played with it only for a couple hours during band practice, and didn't get to experience much beyond the famous sweet spot and then lower gain with the heat knob slightly turned up. It sounds awesome, and I can't wait to experiment more. I've been in search of an overdrive I liked for a year, and I think I finally found one that's gonna stick. Thanks @SouthamptonPdls !!

Any of y'all have any must-try settings recommendations?

My favorite is volume cranked with the gain and heat at like 11:00. Having the heat at that level gives it a nice, pleasing fizz.

In addition to what people have said (that it only causes problems if you're splitting your signal between two amps with the pedal on just one of them, or blending two sets of effects with the pedal on one side), it's worth keeping in mind that it's not just pedals — some amps will be out of phase with each other too. I believe it's a function of whether they have an odd or even number of gain stages so probably more of a factor with guitar amps.

Worth keeping in mind though, if you're running a multi-amp rig...

Anyone that has tried both have any input on which one they prefer or how the newer one sounds different from the original?

I own and use both. The version 2 is essentially the "Deluxe" version. It takes the v1 but adds more controls. At certain settings, v2 sounds just like v1.

My v1 is always on, knob at 10 o clock for the added low-mid magic and tiny amount of grit.

My v2 is set quite dirty.

I have played both! V2 can do the exact same as the V1 with volume maxed and heat all the way off. I can promise you the circuits are identical. Exact same parts too.

Does the Heat knob adjust the brightness or something more? From what I have heard of demos, both sound amazing! Just curious as to which I should go after haha. Thanks for the replies!

v2 has a lot more flexibility.....because of the big volume jump, I see v1 as either an always on pedal, or a boost (I use it as the latter with gain about 930 - it is a sizeable boost even there). The v2 would fit much better in an OD role

Exactly what Noylin said.

The Heat knob is (I believe) a voltage sag. So it impacts how "refined" or "wooly" the overdrive is depending on how it's set.

v1 for always on tone sweetening or a loud dirty boost.

v2 for when-you-want-it overdrive.

here's my board for this weekend....though the knobs are not where I usually set them....
