USB rechargeable onboard preamp power- Why not more common?

Innovation is good, but sometimes it's better to leave the things for what they are.

Personally, I am tired of all the so-called improvements that make life easier and more environmentally friendly. Work-related, I am happy to join in the merry-go-round of updates and patches. But outside of that, I want to reduce this to the minimum. I still read books, I still use pen and paper and have a street map in my car, I still talk to the people around me, and I want to keep my hobbies as analog as possible.
A QR code in a restaurant instead of a menu I find despicable and a reason to leave a restaurant.
Museums that only sell tickets on line, where you can't get in, even if you're at the door ... These are really not improvements.
So please stay off my bass with your so called improvements and don't turn it into a chicken!

I’m all for improvements as options. But not as requirements. A USB option for a bass would be great for some. But don’t ditch the standard battery setup, plenty of folks will only use that.

QR menus and online sales, great option for expanding your customer base. But don’t ditch the standard analog procedures.

I’m old school too. All my cars are 96 or older. I still use physical media, CRT TVs with RCA ports, and a 10 foot satellite dish. I just had my 27 year old leather jacket repaired. But I’m not against anyone who embraces the new stuff.
 
It happened to me. Mid set and my onboard preamp batteries start dying and giving off that AWFUL sound that we all know. The MTD 635 doesnt have a passive switch, so I have to suffer through it with a lighter touch... Alas, no indicator anywhere to tell me my batteries are weak...

I've seen a bass out there that has a USB input on the back to recharge the internal battery. Why isnt this the norm on new basses with onboard active preamps? If the user could have the option to plug in their bass and charge the battery the night before a gig they could have the confidence to do it without pulling the battery, testing it, throwing away good batteries, or hoping for the best. I would love to see this as the norm.
I'd say probably because how hard is it to change a battery, really?:meh:

Yes that’s the #1 reason. IMO the golden era is after the onset of fuel injection and electronic ignition = reliability, but the computer only controls the basics = simple to work on.

A secondary reason is the govt mandated crash standards after 96, which meant most classic designs had to be abandoned. New thicker doors and massive blind spots on the pillars. I can’t even see out the back of my mom’s Escape. She says that’s what the backup camera is for. Ehhhh.

It’s my choice and I like having that choice available.

Just like active vs passive basses. Passive didn’t disappear once active became popular. People like both.

Under a control plate, then yes.
Under a flip top battery compartment, not so much.
At one time the former was more prevalent, but the ladder is much more common more recently.
Mine is under a plate with screws. Yes, I do know how to change them and it is a minor inconvenience, but why people get huffy about an added convenience is absurd. I mean, you seem to be ok with the flip top battery compartment. Thats not how it was, and yet people like it. Why stop there?

To me, having to plug into something else that takes time to charge when a replacement battery is (almost) instant would be the reason to stop.

'For this next song I'll sit out for 6 minutes while I recharge'. Nope, not even for this bedroom bass playing hack.

If you have a preamp with a USB-rechargeable battery and that battery dies for whatever reason, you’re stuck. With a preamp that uses ordinary 9V batteries you can just pop in a new one between songs and be good to go. When I still owned active basses, I always kept a spare 9V battery in my gig bag for that purpose.
Yep, this. Also, check your batteries. A testing meter is easy enough to find, and you won't have any surprises if you know your batteries are well-charged before a show.

If you don't have a meter and you have any doubt, put some fresh ones in before you leave the house. This is just routine maintenance. Nobody has an excuse for being caught on stage with dead batteries.
 
I didn't read the replies. But for me I do not want an ONBOARD rechargeable battery system. I have that with my music stand lights and always bring an extra light for backup for that time.

I've been on gigs when my onboard bass battery died. On one instance I could just flip to passive mode. On another instance it sent me scrambling to replace the battery. Quick enough, but I do not want to have to mind the battery in case I forget to power check it before a gig.

USB-C will be with us for a while because it supports multiple protocols over a single connection. USB4 is nothing but Thunderbolt 3 under the hood and will support HDMI, Display Port, USB1 to 3.2, power delivery up to 100 watts for fast charging and no more fussing with putting the plug in upside down or using different cables for different devices. It's small enough that even thin devices can have a USB-C jack, no need for mini this, micro that any more.

The biggest barrier to USB-C today is manufacturers dragging their heels selling devices with older USB connectors. It's already been around 8 years, when Apple shipped the 2015 MacBook with only a single USB-C jack. Yet if I shop for a desktop hard drive, Western Digital, Seagate and others are not using it yet and many portable HDDs, SSDs and thumb drives don't use it either. Many computer makers still ship machines with USB-C and USB-A jacks, prolonging the agony. The EU forcing all portable devices to use USB-C starting in 2025 will accelerate acceptance.

100W? You could use that to power an entire amp.

Until the government determines that you have to pay more road taxes for your older car for ecological reasons. You are no longer allowed to enter several cities because of air pollution. The fuel you use has to be diluted with bio-ethanol which causes a harmful attack on your injectors, increasing your consumption and emissions.
Here they do everything they can to get rid of your older car so that you can buy an environmentally friendly one that breaks down after 3 years or just after the warranty period so that the car industry can produce a new one.
Your older car disappears to a third world country where it stays around as long as possible because the newer models can't handle the local lower fuel quality.

Believe it or not, many high end laptops require that much juice for fast charging. Apple has laptop chargers ranging from 35W (what my recent MacBook Airs came with) to 140 watts :wideyed:

According to the USB Power Delivery spec, the "standard" range is 0.5W to 100W and the "extended" range is 100 to 240 watts :thumbsup:

This is why you are seeing more and more electronic devices powered over USB rather than traditional wall warts. Maybe pedal boards will have it soon :hyper:

My work laptop requires 60W over USB-C. I'm now waiting for someone to integrate one of those pedalboard amps into an instrument for fun. I'm not sure I'd want to put a TE Elf into one, due to requiring a fan.

My work laptop's power supply can charge my phone very quickly, which is handy sometimes.

But then, what do you charge... Your bass, or your phone to control your Sound Print equipped amp? Or do you integrate the phone into the bass and have it run your other effects too? Then you can truly phone in your performance.
