Vegetarian Club Anyone?

Been a vegan for 2 years almost, don't think I'll change but I have a question for long term vegans.

Do you get any kind of sickness or anything bad because of being a vegan?

People's been bugging me on this since I turned, and a long time vegan singer got some kind of illness because of it a while back and she "had to" eat meat again to keep up.She says she feels terrible for eating meat again though.

I don't understand why it is hard for most people understand there are good and bad vegan diets. You could have a vegan diet of french fries, Pepsi, and swedish fish (candy) but that is not a healthy version of a vegan diet. Most vegans I know have a diverse diet.

The other pet peeve I have is about these mythical sickly vegetarian. In the last 8 years, I've meet hundreds of veg/vegans and not one ever mentioned any chronic illness. In fact, many middle aged and older folks tell me their lingering sore throats, aches and pains, etc. went away when they went to a healthier vegan diet.

I challenge anyone to make me a list of of the people you know personally (no hearsay) that have died of heart disease/attacks (2/3 to 3/4th is attributed to diet and exercise). Compare the percent of people who had a vegetarian vs. an omnivorous diet. Let me know what you find.

I know there are good and bad diets,of course eating fries and Pepsi all the time is bad,I may have room temperature IQ but still,I can tell the difference.:)

What I was wondering is,does human body break down somehow without eating dead animals even if you follow the best vegan diet?
Mind you, even if it does,I won't be changing my diet till it starts breaking down.I'm that hardcore vegan.I walked the streets with an Adidas regular sport shoes, that was made by using artifical-leather when it was 0 degrees Celcius and 5 cm's of snow.

No, the body does not break down due to a vegan diet. A body breaks down if it doesnt get the nutrients and minerals it needs to complete metabolic processes. All of which are available on a vegan diet. But you have to do your homework. After all, the original diet was nuts, fruits and grains and they lived to 8-900 years old. Contrary to popular belief, the human body was never intended to assimilate animal proteins-it can, because we are omnivores, but it has a harder time doing so, and those who eat meat have a shorter lifespan than those who dont (on average).

Yooo veg 8 years...hooowa

sweet diggs to elderly vegetarians, it takes some dedication to stay healthy regardless of diet. and to I Play Metal, HOW did you do that?!

So it was time for my yearly intrusive physical. I told my Doctor I quit eating meats except for fish a few months ago. His responds was " Well I think meat is good for you" Here are the arguments he raised.

1: People have been eating meat for millions of years.

2: Farming of grains etc has only been around for a few thousand of years. Before that people did not know how to really farm like today so they had to eat meat, which was natural.

3: Grass fed animals are good to eat, its the ones that are corn fed etc that are the issues, because corn is not a natural food source for many of these farm animals, and force feeding them this has caused their omega 3 to flip to an unhealthy level.

4: He referenced the Paleo Diet. here is a quote from a website about it and the url below it.

"The Paleo Diet mimics the types of foods every single person on the planet ate prior to the Agricultural Revolution (a mere 500 generations ago). These foods (fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and seafood)

http://www.thepaleodiet.com/faqs/

None of the above convinced me to go back to eating the meats I have given up, but I find it VERY INTERESTING that you can get two very different and opposite opinions from different Doctors who are suppose to know better then we do what good for the body and what is not.

Finally Men, get those yearly exams that we all hate (psa) if you are over 40, it could save your life!

Doctors average about 3 hours of education in nutrition in medical school. We have a health system that centered around crisis management (surgeries and pharmecuticals based treatment) not wellness (preventative medicine). However, this is slowly changing.

Let me guess, the last thing your doctor read about nutrition since med school was this fad diet book? It is a great marketing ploy. It sounds like a manly diet. I find it patently absurd. What paleolithic people did eat (and also what humans are "meant" in any era) is irrelevant. How long was the average lifespan of the average paleolithic human? I am not an anthropolegist, but I am guessing it is marketly shorter.

And as far as meat being good - the bulk of the unbiased research in the last 30 years says otherwise.

People lose weight on this diet in the short term because they cut calories (by not eating as much processed and junk food- which of course is good) and they eat much more meat (which is bad - you get into the whole keotosis thing).

1. People aren't millions of years old as a species.

2. People are naturally gatherers. If your doc wants to play the evolutionary card then he needs to get his facts right. People are omnivorous and did eat meat, but the body does not evolve as fast as technology, so the body is able to eat meat sparingly and in small doses. Meat was not a daily part of the diet. Meat was still far harder to procure than edible vegetables even before farming.

4. The concept of the paleo diet is valid, but very poorly emulated by most practitioners.

I like the ideals of vegetarian but I have a problem.

I love meat centered things, for example:
- Kabob
- Spicy Italian Sausage
- Tacos!

I know I would be able to replicate the flavorings on faux meat or substituting other foods for the meat, but I eat out almost 90% of the week. I'm a full time college student with a full time job. I'm gone from 8am until 1-2am most weekdays. How can I replace these foods that I would normally get?

I like tofu when prepared properly; I can get tofu related products almost anywhere but most places do a horrible job.

What do you guys recommend? I love the taste of meat but I want to try vege.

Understood, I'm am convinced that I made the right choice. It just bothers me that people in the Medical filed who should know better have such opposing views on it. Heck, as far as I am concerned, it either is or it is not. I am convinced it is. There just seem to be A LOT of grey area from both sides.

Shoot even though I eat fish, I have found out that I should not eat TOO MUCH of it due to the possibility of mercury poisoning. Oh well. baby steps I guess.
