Vegetarian Club Anyone?

I like the ideals of vegetarian but I have a problem.

I love meat centered things, for example:
- Kabob
- Spicy Italian Sausage
- Tacos!

I know I would be able to replicate the flavorings on faux meat or substituting other foods for the meat, but I eat out almost 90% of the week. I'm a full time college student with a full time job. I'm gone from 8am until 1-2am most weekdays. How can I replace these foods that I would normally get?

I like tofu when prepared properly; I can get tofu related products almost anywhere but most places do a horrible job.

What do you guys recommend? I love the taste of meat but I want to try vege.

Regardless of how you eat you're doing yourself no favors eating out constantly.

My advice is to look in to the local vegetarian restaurants/stores in your area and start checking them out to see what you do and don't enjoy. Think about organizing a vegetarian potluck if you have enough friends who'd be into it.
Pick up some veg meat substitutes and try making them at home, or suppliment veg meats in some of your favorite dishes from restaurants (ie. order a burrito without meat and put some veg meat you cooked at home on it to add the flavor and substance to the burrito).

Many of us lead busy lives and still find time to eat veg. It isn't always easy but the more you try to integrate it into your daily routine the easier it becomes. You eating 3 meals a day right now? Make a rule for yourself that one has to be meat free. Any one of the three, doesn't have to be the same meal each day.

Once a week make time to cook something new at home to try. This doesn't have to be anything fancy if you aren't a great cook. Start simple, but keep at it.

Good for you for thinking about trying to include more veg eating in your diet.

So it was time for my yearly intrusive physical. I told my Doctor I quit eating meats except for fish a few months ago. His responds was " Well I think meat is good for you" Here are the arguments he raised.

1: People have been eating meat for millions of years.

2: Farming of grains etc has only been around for a few thousand of years. Before that people did not know how to really farm like today so they had to eat meat, which was natural.

3: Grass fed animals are good to eat, its the ones that are corn fed etc that are the issues, because corn is not a natural food source for many of these farm animals, and force feeding them this has caused their omega 3 to flip to an unhealthy level.

4: He referenced the Paleo Diet. here is a quote from a website about it and the url below it.

"The Paleo Diet mimics the types of foods every single person on the planet ate prior to the Agricultural Revolution (a mere 500 generations ago). These foods (fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and seafood)

None of the above convinced me to go back to eating the meats I have given up, but I find it VERY INTERESTING that you can get two very different and opposite opinions from different Doctors who are suppose to know better then we do what good for the body and what is not.

Finally Men, get those yearly exams that we all hate (psa) if you are over 40, it could save your life!

This is wrong on so many levels. I am going to thump my Bible here for a sec, so bear with me.

First of all, man has not been eating meat for millions of years. It is scientifically provable that the earth is less than 10,000 years old-and its closer to 5000. Anyway, I know a lot of you dont want to hear from the Bible, but if nothing else, its an incredible history book. And in it I find that the original diet was nuts, fruits, and grains. Meat was introduced at the flood. God knew that the flood was going to destroy everything and that there werent going to be any crops to reap when Noah and his family finally left the ark. So, as a stop gap, He gave them meat to eat. God had also seen what man did when given a long lifespan, so maybe there was a secondary reason to introduce meat into mans diet. We do know that at least the elite, or royalty were not meat eaters, or at least they ate very little. a couple thousand years after the flood, 3 youth of the royal house of Israel were taken in to captivity by the Babylonian king. Because they were the best and brightest, he wanted to incorporate them into his advisor cadre. So he ordered that they were to have the best food and drink from his very own table because he thought that would keep them healthy. They politely declined and asked for a vegetarian diet instead stating that it would keep them healthier than the kings diet. And they proved it too. So, a vegetarian diet is nothing new, as is the idea that meat is needed for good health.

We'll have to agree to disagree about the age of the planet. :hmm:

Please be careful with religious content, it'd be a shame if this thread got shut down.

WOW.

Please, please, provide us all with a new thread where you can show us these facts. I am serious. Seriously serious.

Or, feel free to PM these scientific facts.

-Veggie Kabobs. Substitute marinated Tofu for meat.
-Smart Dogs. They make a type of fake hotdog/italian sausage dog. I havent tried these myself, but the chorizo dog & soyrizo is delicious.
-Tacos! With meal starters fake meat crumbles instead of ground beef. Thats what I ate for dinner last night!

Also, some vegetarian fast food options-
1/2lb Bean & Cheese Burritos from Del Taco. Or order anything with meat in it and substitute beans for meat. Thsi can also be done at taco bell.
Salads & Baked Potatos from Wendys.
Find a Mediteranian place and order some falafel.
Many fast food places will have a veggie burger of some sort.

Make yourself a vegetarian dish but cook enough for maybe 2 or 3 servings and save some for later! Get tupperware and take it with you!

First of all thanks for the answers.:)

I have another question though. My diet is mostly the food I used to eat but w/o meat in it.Now I know you're not familiar with the Turkish food, but it has lots of meat in it,almost every hot dish has meat in it.So the average people think I'm a mutant as I took out the meat (doubled the work for mum, she's an angel for that). How good is that?

Who am I kidding,I'm probably malnutritioned on dangerous levels right now.(I was already when I used to eat meat)I gotta see some one pro. on the vegan diet.

ps:I can make a new subs. just to go into lobby if Ol'Bass'ead's point of view starts a new thread there.I love you man, you're a very good, naive person.I used naive in a good way.

I have vegan friends who won't eat anything if meat has been in it. I dont know if you meant to say that you pick the meat out yourself or if your mum makes a second meatless meal for you. Picking it out wouldnt fly for them (but thats them, theyre very strict about it).

I don't eat if meat's been there.Picking it up doesn't work for me and I'm very strict about that too.So she has to cook another one w/o meat in it.

Right on. If I'm going to eat at my parents house my mom will do the same for me. Normally, I wouldnt have eaten that piece of pizza, but I was drunk, hungry, and broke, and a meat eater paid for the pizza. All the veg-heads ate up all the cheese pizza that my gf bought so I was left to improvise.
I ate a bean & cheese burrito. I guess someone at Del Taco didnt realize bean & cheese burritos shouldnt have a glob of shredded beef in the middle. I had to throw that crap out the window, I almost threw up.

That doesn't fly with me either. if there's been meat in it, i'm not interested, just as i wouldn't use a fork to eat my salad that someone else just used to eat their steak with. i always thought this was a standard thing.

i don't feel like having something that is the direct result of violence to do anything with me. but that doesn't mean i'm a 'brat' about it.

I had the same thing with the pizza,I was drunk and hungry,it was 3AM.I carved the meat from the pizza, and if there was any meat left I couldn't taste it as my tongue was numb due to alcohol and hot souce.

The day after I woke up with the taste of meat,it was very little but I felt terrible and nothing made it go away.I proved my "don't eat if its been cooked with meat in it" idea though.

Will do. And I wasnt arguing this from a religious point of view, but an historical/scientific one. I will take my arguments to PMs.

Thanks. I don't have a problem with your religion; you've talked with me about it before through pm's, I just don't want to see this thread get closed.
