Vegetarian Club Anyone?

Been a veggie for a year now, and I like it :)

You have to be careful too of non-meat products that actually contain meat by-products such as gelatin...You'd be surprised how much stuff contains gelatin! I got sad for about 10 minutes when I found out that sour cream has gelatin in it until my wife found sour cream without it for a whole 50 cents more.lol..

I just had Nachos with morning-star farms "meat" in it. You literally can't tell the difference between real meat and fake meat.

I think my conscience got the better of me. I realized that animals were being tortured and killed just so my meat-eating arse could sink my teeth into their muscle... Yeah I'm all set with that...So I poop an extra time a day. Hey if it means that an animal will be saved because of it, I'm okay with it. :D

About Xmas of 02 got sick, almost got dead, didn't, got better. Been A vege ever since. The way my friends cry about the price of meat I'm not sure why they bother.

Glad you got better!

I had a similar experience in 1993 - damn near died of food poisoning from Taco Hell. Never went back there again after that, and it was a major reason why I became a veggie...

Yeah, I know we can still get sick off of plant foods, but it seems much more likely with meats (past the "bad date", not properly kept or cooked, etc...)

I'd like to join. I'm a vegan because I don't think meat eating is sustainable, the way we do it. Sure, if the situation was different and the world was less populated and we got our meat ourselves, I wouldn't mind, but we are no longer part of the food chain, so we shouldn't try include ourselves IMHO.

For christmas, my girlfriend and I had for breakfast:
Mushrooms marinated in balsamic vinegar
Fried tomatoes
Home made hash browns
Avocado
Gluten free, vegan toast (she's a coeliac)

For lunch:
Chopped roast nuts and celery in pastry
Peruvian tomato, onion and jalapeno salad
Roast potato, pumpkin and kumara (sweet potato for all you non-Kiwi's)
Big flat mushrooms rubbed with balsamic vinegar and garlic on a bed of spinach, lettuce and basil leaves

Didn't eat after that til dessert, which was a beautiful berry cheese(tofu)cake my girlfriend made with lemon sorbet.

I know I'll be forgetting some things, but those were the most memorable parts. Enjoyed with lots of egg and milk free wine!

Here in NZ, a small provincial country where many people can thank the dairy and sheep industry for their income, or their families income, it's much harder. No such thing as a vege option at any fast food chain, unless you leave the meat off at Subway, but just taking the meat away is hardly the right idea. Faux-meat products are horribly expensive here too, probably due to our meat industry heritage, so being a student, I make do without. I live in NZ's most 'liberal' city, so vegan food can be found, but just like anywhere else in the country, you still get the same old people with old ideas. God-forbid someone would go veg in a small town.

Best bet is to find an area with Indian food stores and restaurants.

I have been wanting to eat more vegetarian meals but when it comes to making dishes, I'm at a loss. Can anyone recommend a good vegetarian cook book?

If youre one of those that likes to make meals on the cheap, with few ingredients, the Students Vegetarian Cookbook is pretty good. Just avoid any asian dishes that call for the use of ketchep.

I wish I could remember the names or the author of the other cookbooks we have, the food in there is much better, but a bit more complex.
