Victor Wooten....Hartke?!?!?!!!!

yep, and as the thread is slowly getting back on track, it looks like Vic might be going with Hartke, at least for the SMV tour goes.

the HyDrive stuff is nutty, a completely different speaker and not just hype or marketing. To have someone with Vic's ears and experience get behind it would be really cool to see.

I never had a chance to try the HyDrive stuff when it was at the now out of business Low Down Sound.

If it is anything like the 2.5/4/5 stuff, then I bet it just kills!
Two of my more fav cabs are the 2.5XL and the 4.5XL.

Anyone know if they are still making those cabs??

I need to call Larry!!!

Why do you like their fives? I never heard them -- I don't think.

Seems like the 4.5s are easier to get than the 2.5s.

Um, I broke the news right after seeing SMV on the first night of their tour. :smug: Vic was using two of the new Hartke heads (500 or 1000 ?, couldn't see them well enough to tell) with 2 410s and 2 115s.

LDS went out of business? When did that happen?

Yeah, it's good (for me) and bad (for me too!)
The good: it's walking distance from my house and they always had cool stuff. Which in my state of ever changing GAS is bad- so it's good now that it's harder to spend my money!;)

Anyway, they had some HyDrive stuff in there, but I was never in there long enough to check any of it out.

Now have to look elseware to find the stuff.

I did check out that head (can't remember the model) that had like three tone knobs on it, as well as Vol & a master Vol.
It was SERIOUSLY loud and good sounding.

I sent a note to one of the reps in the Nashville area trying to find a store that had the HyDrive cabinets 3 weeks ago.

Just last night, weeks after my inquiry and having already purchased an HX115 and HX410, I got a note from a local rep indicating that one of the local stores would have them soon and that Victor Wooten had just signed as an endorsement deal.

As for the cabinets: I went out with the intention of buying an SVT 810E. I ended up buying a HX115 and HX410 HyDrive after A/B testing them with a bunch of other cabinets using my SVT4-Pro to power them. The SVT cab would have been $100 cheaper. I guess that tells the story.

Not sure what you mean by their "fives".
The 5 is just the high freq driver they use.
And surprisingly enough, for a little 5" aluminum driver with nothing more than a capacitor in line- no crossover- they are really smooth sounding.
IMO, after using a pair of them, and A/B'ing them with cabs costing 4 times as much, to be honest, they sounded darn near as good.

In fact at a GTG a while back (when I had the cabs) I pulled one out and started playing through it, EVERYone stopped and kinda was like ***?!?! That's a Hartke?!?!???

COEN, Sam Ash in Madison has had the HyDrive gear for about 6 months. Typical Hartke sound, but if Vic can get that sound out of an Ampeg, he can get it out of any amp. Honestly, you will find sounds similar to Vics more in the pickups, EMG's, than the amp. Not to mention, the man himself. No slam on Hartke, but even Vic and Anthony will tell you, dont play follow the leader, take away the things you like and blend them into a style of your own. I have found my sound, after years of looking and being a Victor Wooten fan, and its Aguilar Amps, and several good basses that are setup to play the way I like them.

Right on! I think Vic is great, but I have no intentions of ever sounding or playing like him, so he could use Behringer for all I care ;) Blaze your own trail...endorsements are cool and they do sell amps, but the gear alone won't make you sound like Vic. Nothing will except being Vic.

Theaterbass, Note in my post that I got the cabs before hearing the VW news and don't be so sure it's the EMG's.

I've been using EMG's in some of my basses since 1986. These cabs rock (and I was never a fan of previous Harkte cabs.)
The HX115 may be the best sounding cabinet I've ever heard. Part of it is the horn. the top end is crispy and brings out the fret growl when you want it without getting harsh. The bottom is tight and the mids are smooth and clear.

I think Hartke cabs and heads are very underated. Some group them with Behringer, Yorkville and Peavey (Peavey and Yorkville/Traynor IMO are also under appreciated on the high end - expecially the tube heads) and I have no idea why.

I personally don't like the sound of Hartke as much as the gear I currently own, but I think many cut up Hartke and have zero or very little experience with their products.

I still use an old Hartke 5000 and it did develop some bad solder joints at one time, but I had it repaired and it still works, gives me plenty of options (including biamping), can get very loud, and delivers solid tone. However, what Vic or other pros on his level pick isn't realistic for a local bassist like myself. I need gear that I can get into my car and carry onto the stage - Vic's issues are not the same. Sure, we both may want clarity and grit when we need it, plenty of headroom..., but still, even if I wanted to sound exactly like him, it might require different gear for me. I am happy to see Hartke get some positive press though as it does seem like they were kicked to the curb.

I was always surprised that Vic played Ampeg for his sound. Nothing wrong with Ampeg, per se, but I could never imagine him getting his bright, fullrange tone out of what is IME darker-sounding gear. Not surprised on the Hartke move. Great match for his tone. On a side note, I just snagged a Hartke Kickback 15 that sounds friggin AWESOME with my Sadowsky PJ5!!!
