Victor Wooten now using D'Addario Strings

Hip hop slang is more interesting, especially when used by 50 year old white men.
I agree for the most part. I do believe endorsements mean nothing more than a paycheck to an artist and we should ignore them from a consumer stand point.
Well go ahead then. But there's a reason companies go after them...they sell. You think Fodera would have a 3 year waiting list if Victor Wooten didn't use them? Hint: they didn't before he got popular.
No doubt you are correct about the dumb masses out there that by product based on who is using it but that would not be me and I would advise against it. You will end up dissapointed when you learn you do not sound anything like artist X.
I still like D'Addario strings, though I've been using Dunlop for a while.
I played D'Addario for many years and was always very happy with them. I have one Jazz strung with a set of D'Addario XL170 right now. The bass sounds great, too; as great as any classic Jazz I've ever heard. Honestly, It feels like going home every time I play the D'Addario's.
There is NOTHING at all wrong with using D'Addario. "You get what you pay for" doesn't fit this situation. Wooten isn't "selling out" at all. MANY great players use, have used and still use D'Addario.
To the DR snobs: How many of you tried High Beams, just because Marcus played them? I can't stand those strings. I had more bad sets of them than I have of any other brand--albeit years ago.

last xx posts of a "VW changes string endorsement" thread, were a quick diversion into 90's hip hop scatology. a few almost angry, indignant, near personal attacks .. and there you go.

I posted that Vic was using D'addario strings because some people would like to know these kinds of things. It's not my fault at all when some people want to turn my threads into something that they are not at all.
It really shows how negative and ignorant people can be.
too true. and yet, it never ceases to amaze (and sometimes, perversely, amuse me) that these threads go the way they do.
It seems like when ever there's a chance to disrespect and be negative towards a player people aren't lost for comments. And they do it while hiding behind a screen name.

I'm there with ya, I still don't like D'Addario strings, seem to go dead too quickly
An effort to make sense out of this terrible Talkbass trainwreck of a thread...
Strings going dead are as much dependent on your body chemistry as the manufacturing method. I used to kill a set in a night. Nowadays a set can go 6 or 7 gigs before they go too dead for my tastes. My body chemistry seems to have changed over the years. Some strings do go dead quicker than others, but I think XL's last as long as most nickel rounds except coated. YMMV.
I actually switched from Rotosound to DR Lo Riders based on a thread I read on talkbass.com long time ago and it had nothing to do with anyone endorsing Lo Riders. Don't even know if anyone famous endorses those today.
BTW, Marcus Miller has his own DR line - Fat Beams, he's not using Hi Beams.
Marcus started with DR, endorsing High Beams. Fat beams are basically custom tailored high beams, developed with Marcus' help. Yep

Actually that is an incorrect statement. We have had a lengthy waiting list since the early 1990's, long before Victor became anywhere near as popular as he is today. We are thrilled that Victor plays our instruments more because of the personal relationship that we have developed with him than for "commercial" reasons. Victor is one of the truly nicest people we have ever come into contact with and he is a very dear friend.
Please remember that for the first 27 years that he played our instruments we were unable to provide him or his incredible charitable endeavors ANY financial support. Yes, you read that correctly...from 1983 until 2010 Fodera was never in a financial position that allowed us to pay ANY of our artists any kind of endorsement fees, royalties, etc. These amazing players played (and play) our gear because it is what they want to play, NOT because they make money for doing so. This reality runs in stark contrast to the way that Vic has been portrayed by some in this thread.
As you probably know Vic has played our strings for many years now and before that he played d"Addarios. He has now gone back to them. Before he did the deal with d'Addario he came and discussed it with us -- as a friend. Although he plans on "always" playing our instruments, the reality is that when it comes to strings, as a much, much larger company than Fodera, d'Addario has the ability to support the work that Vic is doing at Wooten Woods to a far greater extent than we are able to. They have global distribution and a huge marketing budget...we are just a little shop in Brooklyn.
"Leaving" our strings for d'Addario helps support the greater good and has our blessing (not that Vic needed it!). As someone that has personally experienced a week at Wooten Woods, this is significant. It is a special place doing some simply amazing things for people and musicians.
Back to our waiting list...
The vast majority of Fodera's ordered have nothing to do with people trying to emulate Victor. We are fortunate enough to work with many really fine artists...not just one. We'd like to think that the wait time for our instruments has more to do with people believing that we strive to build the very finest instruments for them and that they know that they will be treated with exactly the same respect and deference by us as Victor is. Every one of our players is treated the same -- as a unique person that we care about -- and in this age of internet sales and chain store distribution, hopefully our wait time is a collective appreciation of that.
