Again, a different cab, but i always loved those ported 2x15 Kustoms with JBL's. they were great sounding and very solid cabs.

+1 on the Kustoms. Gigged one for many years with D140's, K140's, and finally E140's. Best Blues band tone ever.

I played them new. Apples to apples. Fender Dual Showman with D-140s.
A Sunn 200s would send it home. A 2000s well that's out of orbit. Cab volume and bass reproduction specific design made this so. The Kustom with CTSs would spank the Fender. Yet the Fender had that great Fender tone.

All the then newer gear would drown out Fender amps used for bass. Loved the tone though.

When overdriven those Sunns became something else. I prefer them clean. Yet I dig the Mountain sound.

I have a vintage Kustom 2x15 among my lower powered AlNiCo JBL equipped rigs;

The old split chassis Sunn is on a K140 loaded cab, the B15 now has a D140F (it had the OEM CTS when that pic was taken), and the Kustom cab has a pair of D140F's.

This pic was taken at a TB GTG, and lots of people played through them, and we did some "A/Bing" back and forth.
I thought the best tone was the B15 head into the Sunn/K140 cab, some liked the Portaflex as it stood, or the Sunn rig, or the Kustom rig.

To my ear my old Kustom cab doesn't hang with my Sunn 200S or 215S cabs. It's a lot smaller than the Sunns, which may be why it doesn't have as much of that “testes tickling” effect bottom end wallop like the Sunns do.

John, thanks for re-ruining my ears here. When I was young, the best tone I EVER played through came out of one of these speakers with a GK 800 powering it. That K140 is so killer, im gonna swoop up the first one I see. I remember though, back in the 90's it was hard enough to find a decent cab with a JBL speaker in it. You seem to be doing ok :D

Found a [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], believe it said a 5.5inch mounting depth for the E-140
the magnet diameter is more of a concern with the angled port shelf

It's probably at least as big as the E-140. Not all 15B's have the big magnet, though.

I would think that it would be possible to use the E-140, especially if you're going to front load it.

I'm considering front loading when I build another 2000S cab. The speakers in my modded cab are mounted from the back, which is kind of a pain getting around the angled pieces.
