Vintage 15" JBL comparisons w/soundclips

Rear loading sure looks like a painful way of going about it, any idea why the original has them rear loaded? I don't see Tnuts on the front face face of the original ones either, strange.

In one of the pics Edbass posted, you can see four black T-nuts for each place where a speaker goes. For mine, I used eight t-nuts each, because I'm obsessive like that.

No idea why they're rear loaded, perhaps it was just the usual way things were done at the time? I'm not sure if there's any advantage/disadvantage besides convenience to either method.

Did you check out the ebay link? It might jog your memory on your magnet size.

The speaker in the ebay link has pretty much the same magnet size as mine, though the marking on the back of mine is red instead of blue.

i think that the reason that they were rear loaded is because most speakers, (including JBL's cork one) only had the gasket on the front of the speaker, so it was standard procedure.

I don't think you will have a problem with the E's fitting. I have a 2000S rear loaded with ceramic EV SRO's with the gigantic finned magnet covers.
My factory JBL Sunn cabs all have 4 T bolts, and that's what JBL specifies for their drivers to avoid distorting the frames.
Four bolts snug, not cranked down.
I tighten them across from each other like lug nuts on a car wheel.

I am learning about vintage speakers and love the tone that I get from my vintage Peavey 215. I was thinking about possibly getting another and was wondering if these speakers would fit the bill. I play in a hard rock band and as I said am happy with what I have, but after reading the 14 + pages of this thread I have to say I am totally hooked. Thanks in advance!

I used E140's for many years, after the K140's were discontinued. They are heavier that the K140, ( ceramic magnet), can take a bit more power ( 200 watts ) than the K140, and have a more cutting top end than the K140, which I always associate with a more " sweet " top end. Some think the E140 sounds " harsher " in the mids, also, but in a band mix, I never thought this. The K140 actually has a higher Xmax than the E 140. I don't think you could go wrong with either one, unless the added weight is a factor.

I getting a K-140 in a ported 1x15 cab. Can I send it 500 watts @ 8 ohms from a GB Streamliner 900 without damage ? Or, I could send it 250 watts @ 8 ohms from an Aguilar AG500sc. I'm sure that the two heads will sound very different. I already own the Aguilar but not the Streamliner. I'm considering the Streamliner because of it's reputation for warm tone. I'll try to compare the two heads if I can muster the cash. The K cab will get a clean and dry signal. I won't be trying to get huge low end out of the K cab because it will be atop a modern JBL 1x18 powered sub that I already use with a different Eminence loaded 1x15 cab - don't remember which driver model. I'll probably let go of that Eminence loaded cab and simply keep the K cab. So, my rig will consist of the 1x18 JBL powered sub and the 1x15 JBL K-140. I've enjoyed reading your threads on JBL. Thank you in advance !

You can hook it up to a 2000 watt amp - so long as you don't push it beyond what it was designed to do and is capable of.

Use your ears.

like Bob said above, you can run any amp into a K140, but you have to listen to them. they will handle up to about 175-200 watts RMS. they're conservatively rated at 150 watts (continuous sine wave), but IMO, pushing a full 500 watts continuous thru one would cook it. i've run my GK 1001RBII (700 watts), pushed pretty hard thru a pair of them, but i always listened to hear if they were getting near their limit and kept them below it. JBL's are very efficient speakers, so you really don't need to use a TON of power with them to get alot of volume out of them.

Thanks for the response. I may just go for it! I need to find a cab, but maybe I'll get the speakers and keep on the hunt. This is exciting! I'm going to go check out the speakers this weekend. Thanks again!

Is that an old Kustom cab ?

That brings back some memories. I was at the NAMM show the year they were introduced(early 90's). The bass player they had lined up to demo the amps didn't show and I was asked to do the demo. Originally loaded with EV's I believe. They sounded good.
