There is a multitude of godlike Wal players, and some of them incredibly creative, too. Truly original stuff has been created with Wals... Mick Karn is a prime example, just like Geddy of course. I also absolute love the creative stuff Justin Chancellor does with the Bass (the Patient Intro anyone?), even though he goes for a completely diffenrent sound.

If i had to name just one, it would def be Mick Karn. The sound is great, but it's the completely original and awesome lines that he played that never cease to amaze me.

Part of the little nuances of playing is in the hands, but if anyone wants to argue the tone is in the hands, do a side by side comparison. Play the same riffs with a fender, an ibanez, a Ritter, a Fodera, and a wal. Style might be the only thing that is common in that comparison. Tone however is gonna be different on each of those basses. I get tired of that argument. Yes! Each person has their own style, techniques etc......but playing good quality equipment with good electronics, pickups, amps, cabinets etc... Is gonna make the tone! Period

If you take one bass player and have him try 4 distinct basses, all four will sound different. Then take another bassist and have him try the same 4 basses, they'll also all sound different, but the same two basses in both of their hands will also not sound alike. Tone is affected by both hardware and the player, more so by the instrument in my opinion but the player's attack definitely has an affect on tone.
