I asked him to find me some Canadian Birdseye Maple and within 4 days he sends me these pics!...I would imagine that Paul may like some of this!...i may hold off a bit to see if he can find me some that has a bit more concentration of the BE's....but im pretty sure these are a bit more concentraded than what Paul is putting out now.
These boards are pretty thick...i would imagine you could make alot of facings out of just this lot!!

wow, awesome playing man. And good music to boot!![]()
I'll see if I can get a "reasonably close" tone together from my fretted PJ (Fender cowpoke) for you guys to pick apart, since I opened my big mouth.I'll let you know what gear settings, eq, etc I use to do it also, with the caveat that we all know the majority of the tone is in Geddy's hands and I'm no Geddy.

re: Big Money sound
So I got some time yesterday in the studio to try this out and here's a first crack at that "reasonably close" sound...
I got distracted by actually writing a tune more so than trying to work hard at getting that bass sound but for me it is, if not reasonably close yet, at least going in that direction. I can tell from my little exercise yesterday that getting that focused low end growl will be difficult. I can get the fat low end, I can get growl, but with the Fender PJ the low end is not as focused, it's a little loose. Anyway, feel free to tell me what you guys hear and I'll try and incorporate that into experiment #2 whenever I get some more time. I didn't have the Big Money tune with me for a reference, just went by memory.
Gear used: Fender Cowpoke PJ bass, mix is about 60% on jazz pickup, 40% on P, tone and volume controls cranked up all the way, sent into a TAB tube DI/pre, then into an SSL clone compressor with the Turbo Low setting (basically doesn't trigger as much on the low end so less pumping sound). The TAB DI overdrives easily and that in combination with the SSL TL setting was an attempt to get that low end growl happening. No eq was used. And I played fairly hard, more plucking with fingers than picking.

Cool dude!...I liked the riffs and overall mix of the synth/guitar/bass
To me it sounded like a Fender![]()
speaking of recordings. I haven't done anything official with my wal yet. but here's a fine HI TECH recording using some very refined studio techniques.
Signal chain
1992 Wal Mk1 >> Fender Rumble Practice Amp >> iphone 4s laying on the floor 2 feet from combo amp with voice recorder enabled.
I present to you a nowhere-near-accurate butchering of "Freewill". (yeah I know that wasn't a Wal era song...)

More BE!?
I'm a simple and primitive creature...I actually like the far left board with much less.![]()

Yes more!...this is what I'm looking for on the whole wood blank

Very cool. I've got a much better idea of that Wal sound after listening to this.

Found a rare piece while on vacation in Cali last week; a factory flight case in minty shape.
I had to drive to Disneyland to get it.
