So do i officially have a problem if my first wal hasn't come and i'm looking at ordering another.
That trans red olive ash mk1 fretted is coming to me. Supposed to be shipped Dec 5. Long term plan for that one is to play it have it checked. Then send the neck to have a one with a black headstock made.
Then comes the problem of what do I do when it is down waiting on a neck to be made.
I'm looking hard at the shedua on bass direct. With all the pole adjustments, pick attack adjustments etc. eventually i think I'll have one adjusted for a smooth jazz like tone. One hotter for rock etc.
Talked to the leader of a band tonight. They have been using keys for bass. They are more rock, rap etc in the process of cutting an album. Figured the ash with a hotter setup gain pickup height etc may be better for them. That shedua adjusted more mellow and jazzy etc would work for my mick style jazz trio thing i want to build.
Am i over analyzing this? Bass has gotten me out there networking some with a little more confidence. I look at it like business equipment expenditure, networking advertising, and tools for my personal eargasms.
Probably need to put my brain power back to running scale positions. and making exercises. The bass with this band won't require half the chops I'm trying to build.

getting ready to order some new fretwire for my MKI, Paul said he'd throw in a free t shirt. I guess since I have a bass on order. what a guy!
asked about a set of knobs since mine are a looking a little tired. £74, yikes! I'll keep the old ones! he also mentioned that they will modify the old bridges with the narrow string slots, but I don't think I can live without my wal's bridge so holding off on that. I'm really liking the custom set of d'addarios and they fit without a problem and without squishing. so I'm good for now. I was worried the .070 a string would be weird, but it's a great feeling set of strings. .100-.070-.055-.040. you can really fly on these things, but you don't lose as much beef as you do with a set of off the rack super lights.
last thought. thinking of doing a light amber stain on my maple build. forgot to ask him. anyone know if he does that?

Yup! When I asked before about refin/tinting bodies he quoted around £400-500 depending on prep work involved and such. Then again it was almost two years ago so prices most likely would change.

Yup! When I asked before about refin/tinting bodies he quoted around £400-500 depending on prep work involved and such. Then again it was almost two years ago so prices most likely would change.
Bout wowzers £74 for new knobs?!?
By the way, Bassplace, still no word from Paul with your re-born Pro???
gotcha. I was thinking of keeping it satin but doing a stain rather than gloss poly. at £400 I'd pass.

Wal basses have a very big demand, more than they can produce. They are wanted worldwide , they are fine high grade pieces of art and a bass player dream , also maybe some kind of bassist's fetich .It's obvious that the "high demand thing" is one of the reasons of the expensive prices for a Wal bass, services and spare parts ! This is the way that things work in a capitalist world ! More we want, more we'll pay. Could someone tell me another bass brand (besides WAL and Carl Thompson) that have almost the same price for an used or a new instrument ? Maybe Fodera ?
PS : Maybe we could change our sophisticated bass guitar taste and ears for a mass produced style instrument ,LOL !

I'm racking my brain, fodera and ken Lawrence are the only ones that come to mind. I'd say Alembic but their prices take a pretty steep hit on the used market.
I'm not thrilled with what this thing is costing me, but I know it's worth it. and there's nothing else out there that will sound like it. and I'll have a free t shirt!

I really think you'd be money ahead and far-far less time involved by just getting the fretless shedua from Bass Direct. While I think its a tad high in price for a fretless, youll also save $ in the customs fee vs a new one. Make em an offer, been sitting there a long time (for a Wal).hunterred43 said:

It's not at Wal. Here in the US at a highly recommended luthier but who is a one man shop. Probably still a ways away but trying to be patient.
Then I'm thinning the herd. Two wals two stingrays. Cabs mesa. Everything else will go. So the markbass combo and the ibanez will go to the Boys and Girls Club I think hopefully make a group of kids have a good Christmas. And give them something productive to do. An fretless acoustic five string i think will donate to the childrens hospital for their pediatric playrooms. Sell the turner renaissance. probably sell the 20th aniversary stingray eventually. I'm not in a rush for that.
Probably donate a cab amp combo to our churches summer camp. Thats actually how i got into bass. There were like 10 kids walking around with acoustic guitars so I brought a drum box. Then there was a guy that played that better than me. So i got a bass. I always liked more melodic soloing plus have these huge hands. So i got a bass and got addicted. They don't have a bass. So maybe the amp cab combo will make the song sessions sound better.
When you fee like donating one of those Wals, I know a perfect home where it'll have 5 wonderful siblings!
Lol, in all seriousness such a great gesture to donate gear to your community. Hopefully you'll get a receipt for a tax write off. With those Wals you got coming, not sure if your state monitors imports, but if they do you may get hit with a Use tax which equals your sales tax. Or be lucky and not get a notice from the state during tax season.

If you have more wals than me. Socialism says that one or two of yours should come to me. Yea. I plan on getting the write offs. I'm trying to balance what I want or need with what folks around me need. I went through a dark, dark time. Bass helped give me something to focus on when I was mad at the world. Hope it can give a kid or two something positive to do. I'm the kid of guy whose brain is always turning on something. Now its on music composition etc. I almost worked myself in a grave over that two years. At some point I figured I needed to slow down some find something to enjoy in life. I'm getting really stoked about some of this music stuff. Looking at these composers like Hindemith. He has a bassoon piano sonata i want to start pulling phrases from. May actually sit down with a teacher to do it.
Sometimes I wonder if I'm going overboard, but I think wals are a decent investment plus I will use them. One fretted wal one fretless. some stingrays. If you have five I feel better.
Three is the music called zouk. I dance it a little plan on learning more. The band I want to put together I want to pull some of these classical and jazz influences into some elegant music I can make swing for people to dance zouk to. Guess that's where listening to mick's tone on the wal inspired me. I like those smooth lyric lines. I have been looking at sources to learn more melodic lyric playing.
