I'm sure mine weighs even more at the headstock and appears even more "big-ear"ed, because of the dumbo tuners Pete used in the early 90's.

Hello Wal experts. A chunk has broken off of the "G" side of my 2000 MKII's nut (between the string slot and the edge of the neck). Doesn't affect playability (yet), but I got a replacement nut from Paul.

I'm no luthier, but I've got no one local I trust to replace this thing. I've been looking at it, and it seems that if I could get the old nut out, the new one should go in no problem. I've already verified the replacement is the same size.

Any tips or tricks to get the old nut out? Prying, hammering, chipping away, etc makes me nervous since there's ebony just above and below the current chipped nut...

Sending the neck to Paul or another luthier is a last-resort case for me. Thanks in advance for your expertise and advice.

i'll try to find the email i got from Paul, but when i had to replace my nut on one of my Wals, it was pretty easy to do..... instructions from what i remember are similiar to this:

if you need to file down the nut slots for your strings, this is what Paul emailed me:

Nut height - this will be affected by the neck relief but should ideally
>> be as low as possible without buzzing when playing the open string.
>> Compare the string height over the 1st fret when played open with the
>> height above the 2nd fret when fretting the 1st fret. It should be just
>> very slightly higher.
>> If the nut is too high, it will not only feel harder to play but also not
>> play in tune. If too low it will rattle when playing open strings.
