Apologies if this has already been posted here.... There's a nice Ernie Ball Strings promo video with Justin Chancellor on YouTube. The cool thing is that while he does mention using EB strings at one point, that's not the primary focus of the video. For someone who isn't able to talk easily (paraphrasing here), Justin sure sounds eloquent and actually quite inspiring, IMO. Plus, for all of us Wal fans out there, he is playing Tool riffs on his Mk2 throughout the video. 
I got the bass back and set it up to the specs posted above by @kulit17. Sounds much clearer and more even. Here is a recording direct into my audio interface. Its both pickups, then front, then rear, everything pushed down and on 10. Pardon the poor technique and reversed order of the middle part. Sound ok?
I should be a brand spankin member of this club by tomorrow! Thanks to my new BFF, Caca de Kick, I "won" this MK1 on Australian ebay. Shipping via FedEx says delivery tomorrow by 10am. Ive wanted a Wal for 30 years!
Depends on what Wal tone you are going for...I wanted the Geddy tone but couldnt afford a real Wal so i got a G&L L2000 and got a reasonable facsimile. I even put in a filter preamp (ACG) to help it even more.
I like the Tool tone, but I don't want to be a copycat. Right now I am using a P bass and I can get pretty close using a preamp and fresh roundwounds, just not close enough. I have thought about modding a Sub stingray, but I want a piezo pickup.
G&L is a reasonable place to start.
Piezo pickups are kind of the opposite of Wal tone, to my ears...
After returning the Mk2 to jro (class act by the way!) I've kept my eyes peeled for another Wal. I just snagged a 1985 Wal Mk1 fretless off of Reverb. It's in "Excellent" condition with just some relatively minor buckle rash on the back. Not bad for a 31 year-old bass.
So, I was out and back in the club! Can I get a number, please kind sir?

Thanks! I am going to sell a couple of basses to help cover the costs, but nothing too bad. The great thing about this transaction is that the US dollar vs the Australian dollar worked in my favor big time!

Do you know I bought my first bass, an Ibanez RB850 back in '86 because I thought it looked somewhat like Geddy's black Wal?

That's interesting to hear. I have never played either, so I am going off of demos, reviews, and favorite songs. I have considered getting a Lakland Skyline, though. Those sound pretty similar. They just don't have all the cool features of a Wal.
And you can get a mint used G&L L2000 Tribute (here on TB for example) for $400ish to get your feet wet. Tributes have the same electronics as the US versions. Great basses in their own right.
Congrats on finding another! Now that I've got mine back I'm not sure I'll let it go again. Probably, but it will be a while. Sounds too good now that everything is in spec.
