I wish I could afford a Wal. Are there any basses that come close to the tone under $1500?

The Wal is a very hard tone to cover with anyother bass, because you roll the filter knobs one way or another and its different.
Last year while I was gigging with one 5 string Wal, I searched hi and low looking for anything else that can be a plug-in and go backup. The ONLY bass I could do that with was a MM Big Al. It had a bright enough top end and in all buttons up mode had the same high output as my Mk2.
And this part will only really pertain to the 5er, but the other nice thing was the Big Al also being 34" and has the same string spacing, so no playing adjustment was needed switching back and forth.

Get something with 2 strong humbucking pickups. L2000 is probably closest although my Musicman Bongo HH can get there too. Both of them can be had for less than 1500.

Month 22 from my quoted 20 month wait. oh well I suspected as much.... Paul hit it on the head when I spoke to him last and said that there was an overwhelming amount of options on my build. oh well at least next one will be a bit simpler

Question: is there a discernible difference in tones between the Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 models? Say for example the same woods were used in all three basses. Considering the electronics are the same in all models, would they all essentially have the same basic sound?

Answer is yes!
With the amount of adjustments that can be made with these basses, any subtle tiny differences would just need a tweek here or there.

Question - what brand strings do you all use for your Wals? I tried installing D'Addarrio XL170s today and I couldn't get the E string in the bridge.

You can probably "pinch" the string a hair with a pair of pliers!

So you know that black Mk1 fretless that I just bought the other day? Well, it's already going up for sale! The reason for this super quick turnaround, is that I ended up snagging the Mk3 5-string fretted that was listed as an Mk2 on eBay (thanks @BWorm!). So, now it's time to sell the Mk1. See, I really wanted a fretted Wal all along, but I got impatient and found the Mk1, thought it was nice and figured I would just have frets added. But of course, the Mk3 comes along just days later and I couldn't resist.

Here's some info re: the Mk1. It was built in 1985 (it has Wal's signature on the back of the control panel!) and was bought by the previous owner new at Bass Centre in the UK. It sounds amazing! I'm not the best fretless player, but it even makes me sound good! Mwah for days! Not surprisingly, given its age, it has its share of bumps and bruises on the body (mostly on the back, with some buckle rash). The neck is in great shape. The fingerboard has very minor wear lines from the strings. Electronics check out fine. Hardware looks great. Includes the original Wal case. Hit me up via PM if you're interested. I'm going to post it on the TB classifieds sometime tomorrow.
