Not a music store...I am just a player. I like to hand select basses and this is one of them

Ahh was watching the 71 Pbass vid..you said "this one wont be around for long" and "we just got this in" thought it might be a store

lol

Ya I was interested in seeing other vids but got stuck at work since the $h!t hit the fan and i'm super busy now! Got practice tonight too but not sure if I'm gonna make it now!! Oh well more OT to fuel that Wal GAS!

Jaymi if basses were women, you'd be a wicked playa!!! Lol! Cool beans man!! Cant wait to see the others!

Hi there. I'm a new member (today) so please don't flame me if I'm posting this is the wrong forum or haven't searched properly (I've tried!).

I own a number of lovely basses, but my main gigging bass is a gorgeous Wal Custom 5 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wal5stringkauri.jpg)

Yesterday in rehearsal it started to distort quite badly when I plucked aggressively. Assuming a failing battery I came home with a brand new battery today and fitted it.

To my horror, the output level has dropped to almost non existent. It's there, but only just. Really.

I checked it on both pickups and with the active/passive push/pull switch in and out. No difference. Just the very faintest output level.

I tried it in a different amp. I tried different basses in the original amp...

All points to a problem inside my Custom 5.

Can anyone suggest any reason why an active bass should suddenly have such a radical drop in output? Preceded by some nasty distortion.

I'm thinking that some electronic component must have fried. One of those funny capacitor or resistor things that I simply do not understand!!

I'd love to hear some thoughts from some of you more technologically literate guys.

Thanks very much for any advice.

I had a white Wal some years back that had the same issue. It was a resistor on one of the circuit boards that had fried...thankfully, there was a local 'wal-nut' who knew what to do and it was back up and rolling in no time...it required pulling the board and replacing the burnt piece...

Just to make one slight correction that may help with understanding the preamp functions: the Wal Custom does not have an active/passive switch. The preamp is always on. There is a pull switch on the volume control to activate the "pick attack" treble boost, and pull switches for the "overshoot peak" boosts on each of the individual pickup filter controls.

Hey Zob! Welcome to TB and the the Wal Club!

I think Mike pretty much covered what I was going to suggests as well and even more.

I've got the same bass and have had to chase a couple electrical gremlins.
First I'd make sure the jack is clean and making proper contact. In all my Wals, the jack has been a very dirty culprit. The other dirt culprit is the pickup connector mulit-pins at the boards.
If it's not that, I'd then carefully and slowly inspect every solder joint with a magnafying glass and light. Make sure the battery leads are still soldered to the board, and every wire still soldered to the output jack (there's about 4 or 5).
I've had to remove the boards from the bass for servicing. It's not difficult at all, but just work gently.

Funny thing though I JUST had the same issue with my Mk1 among other things. the volume thing really bothered me and I couldn't finding anything visually wrong. I removed the preamp (which is pretty easy to do - but like Mike mentioned, be very careful you don't snap off any of the ICs especially the caps) to get a closer look and still didn't see anything. None of the ICs looked damaged or "cooked" so I didn't believe it had anything to do with that. At wits end I remembered I had local tech Jim Mouradian near by. I called him and spoke with his son to see if they ever serviced these basses before and he said his dad knows them "intimately". Anyhu, long story short my issue it was mearly a weak solder joint for the preamp's ground. All was then copestetic. Your issue sounds very similar to mine so I would try to chase that tail. I had a short opportunity to play her yesterday night after work with my band mates and it played without fail!

If you feel the slightest uneasy about looking at the board yourself, find a tech THAT HAS EXPERIENCE with working on Wals and bring it to them. I'm very happy with my experience with Jim Mouridian and if your around the new England area I would definitely recommend him.

Push/pull is for "activating pick attack". Unless you have something custom made or something generally it's volume-push/pull pick attack, blend, individual tone control for each pickup. There are documents floating around explaining this better, but if you needed help I may be able to email you what I have if u PM your address.

Good luck!!!

Well 2535 arrived today...here it is

Excellent video, great playing, and the bass sounds amazing! If you're ever inspired to make another video with one of your Wal's, could you maybe give more demonstration of the different tones you can get from the filter pre-amp, and PLEASE include a good demonstration of the pick-attack feature!
