Whoa. That is the sh*t. These guys can play. You're right about his composing skills. He's like Jaco, that facet of him tends to be overlooked. I love his use of melodic/harmonic minors. That "Arabian" sound - mysterious, cool, and dark. He also plays minors and dominant sevenths where "they don't go" sometimes. Guess who else does that? Mr. John Taylor! I know the DD boys always cite Japan as an influence so maybe there is a connection there. Or maybe, it's all primal and I'm thinking too much.

In John Taylor’s autobiography he talks about how he and Nick went to see Japan in Birmingham and that planted the seed for them wanting to be in a famous rock band. Mick was a huge influence on JT and he has said so.

Mick cited the music from his upbringing (Cypriot) as influential on his sound.
I often play with a guitarist of Cypriot extraction who has similar flavour to his playing. It’s quite odd, really, but not completely surprising.

Mick also gave similar interviews to Bass Player magazine in the US.

I remember in one interview he mentions an anecdote where he was playing with David Torn and David. said “play that a little further up the neck and see what happens.” So Mick went to a lower Fred. He thought up the neck meant where the next sits higher on your body. True story.

Another anecdote I remember well is when Pete Townsend hired him to play in the house band for the Prince’s Trust. He felt a little out of his league at the rehearsal given he was playing with Townsend, Phil Collins, etc. At the end of the rehearsal Pete Townsend gave him a Cassette with all the songs and said “you’ll be just fine.”

Needless to say Mick learned everything by ear and the concert was a success (save for the Kate Bush wardrobe malfunction). Pete Townsend went on to life Mick in the press as the best session bass player in the UK. That gave a huge boost to his session career.
