Why is the bottom knob “silver”?
Someone wore off the anodized plating from lots of useage of that one knob.

It was in '93 that I had Pete make a fretted neck for my '85 fretless, and he recommended sending it to me complete with tuners already installed. Luckily, my neck came with the regular tuners instead of the dumbos.it's a '92-'93 era thing. These are the same dumbo ears Schaller was using on the Fender tuners of the same period, and I think (just an observation) Schaller bozo'ed a big order to Wal and that what they ended up with so just used them up. The gold equipped basses of '92-'93 didn't get dumbos, just the chrome ones.
I'm sure they're adding even more weight to an already heavy headstock.
Yeah, saw that before but more localized on the sharp edges of the knobs.
I was wondering if there might have been another explanation.
Thanks!
Here's a couple of well worn knobs I bought from a lady in the UK years ago.
The top rim is worn pretty good, but the other knob is practically all silver (the underside is still black). Someone must have acidic sweat.
these style tuners were the one schaller sent to them around this time. they can be replaced with the standard M4S or even better on a 5er the M4S Lights.
I don’t like block inlays on a Wal so much. But this one can have it. Love the finish!
Congrats on the purchase. It’s a big commitment but the only way to get the genuine OG.I have just been down this road and have this exact setup..it is a really lovely and unique setup i love my bass built like this to bits Rautia makes lovely pickups and you wont be dissapointed...
i also just ordered a AUD $13000 Wal...it may be an upgrade for your MM and it'll be a seriously awesome one but it still won't scratch the Wal itch IMO.
Are the M4S type tuners drop in replacements for the Dumbos?
Also, I am guessing Paul is the only source for new knobs. How much is a new set?
Cheers mate,Congrats on the purchase. It’s a big commitment but the only way to get the genuine OG.
I’m in Sydney, and seriously considering putting an order in with Wal (after decades of procrastination). How’s the shipping/import tax on importing a new Wal? PM me if you fancy.
James.
Yes. The Canadian dollar is about a similar exchange rate to the AUD, so I also feel your pain when I calculate my price from USD, EURO or GBP.Cheers mate,
The shipping and taxes are very high...10% GST plus a few other minor fees and Paul's shipping is supposedly first class but not cheap either so on a $13,500AUD Bass that's $1,350 GST and i would say around $500 for shipping so yeah add another $2000 to the cost of the bass all up. Making it in 3 payments takes some of the sting but the exchange is killer aswell lol. Posted here for others reference.
Yep it is a big commitment but there is no replacement or alternative.. I will own probably the only 6 string Wal in Australia built to my wishes. I am a huge Warwick fan and a custom built Warwick to my specs would go for pretty much the same price so the choice is a no-brainer. I have 3 gorgeous Warwick's already and can get more..I cant however easily jump on a 6 string Wal.
Well darn, Philip at Wal said they can't sell me any replacement knobs. Any ideas besides asking to put me on a list for when they make their next batch?
Can't any place that does anodizing do these? We deal with aluminum extruded metals for building commercial storefronts - there are many anodizing companies around - this should be more of a PITA but easily doable for them - no?Well darn, Philip at Wal said they can't sell me any replacement knobs. Any ideas besides asking to put me on a list for when they make their next batch?
Thank you so much for this. I’m still keen. I think the 3 year wait is going to be the hardest part..!Cheers mate,

Pete the fish God bless his soul was an awesome luthier but I think Pete has more attention to detail. My 30 year old Mrk2 sounded incredible from day one but since Pete gave it a general overhaul the action is better and to my ears it is sounding slightly punchier. Could be the trans gloss finish I don’t know.Man, $15K for a Wal with poor photos. Interesting.
I guess COVID19 is really starting to get to some individuals.
Or maybe they know something we don't?
I just spoke with someone yesterday who was ordering a new Wal direct.
I told him....you won't regret buying it. The new Wals are totally worth it.
I really dig the two I own.![]()
