Thanks everyone! I just got done with my initial jam and WOW - she sounds so good and lively! I was able to dial in some nice tones really quickly; the mids are exactly what I was hoping for. I haven’t played a five in a while and I was concerned a bit about string space but it wasn’t an issue at all - I find this Neck/Bass to be very playable and comfortable. The weight isn’t bad because my other bass is long scale Alembic Series 1 which is pretty heavy (and has a pretty long reach for a 34” bass). I plan on comparing the sound with the Alembic soon.
Yes, you all are right, I bought the bass from Jon. I am not disappointed in anything about the condition of the bass. I knew it had some bumps in the finish (you can’t see them from 2 feet away), I do need to clean it, especially the fretboard but I like doing that anyways when I get a bass. The electronics look stellar. The price was really decent IMO.

you have to take some pictures outside on a sunny day. I bet that finish and figuring really come to life then.

I will do that because you are definitely right - the finish is pretty alive inside under okay lighting. It changes when the bass moves.
The description isn't right. The M4 90 is what comes on the Mk3.

So I was playing earlier today and I noticed when I hit the open E I hear a faint cold “ring” sound from the brass nut. I couldn’t get a sound clip so that’s the best I could describe it.
Playing with fingers doesn’t seem to generate the sound but when I use a pick it’s almost every open E struck
*I’m using 40-120 nickel rounds, 100 being the E if it matters*
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Well... Another Mk1 somehow found it's way into my possession. A mutual friend of mine who shockingly lives only 20 minutes away and belongs to the Wal facebook group messaged me yesterday and was looking to sell. Needless to say, it followed me home! It's a 1985 Mk1 that was originally fretless, but it got converted. It plays like a dream.

Ok congrats! Is it maple wood with an ebony neck? Does it sound different than your black one? Which one sounds the best?
The first thing to do is change the string and see if you still have the problem.
While there are problems a string change won't fix, it can fix a surprising number of them.
After that, keep narrowing down the variables. Can you get the same sound holding down the E behind the nut? Is the nut slot at a good height? And so on... I know, it can drive you crazy but go for the "easy" solutions first.
