Thats the easier direction to keep original knobs on; the early pots had smaller shafts and knobs had the smaller holes, so if he replaced the pots, then he driilled out the old knobs to fit the new larger shaft.
Its the other way around thats tricky. If you buy newer knobs and and have old style pots, then sleeves have to be made so a large hole knob fits a small shaft pot, and the grub screws need to work.
No, he doesn't have a stash of the old ones.
I got new pots in my ‘85 MK1, kept the original knobs but Paul had to drill out the old knobs to fit the new larger shaft pots.
