No such thing as a cheap Wal at this point. I haven't seen anything under $11k that fit my needs.

Folks with high credit limits and/or good credit. And the simply well-heeled. Is what it is. Wait until the current team retires/dies. If no one else takes up making Wals, $12k will seem cheap.
It being 2020's model 4-string Mk2, that price may be around what it could get. The listing itself is bunched in with a number of other $$ basses, no cavity pic or details on it, but looks to be walnut w/ebony fingerboard.
Are clones the only alternative for most musicians at this point? I’m on the waiting list for the waiting list but it just seems like an impossible dream at this point.

Well I'm on my 5th new build, I use only gig money for gear purchases, and so I take lots gigs and rarely turn any down...I'm typically busy 2-3 and sometimes 4 days per week.
Uh oh fellas! It’s happening! I got the email from Paul today! July ‘24 at the earliest depending on the final wood selections! It will be my first Wal bass ever, I’m so excited!!! 
Each his own. I just can not see myself ever spending so much money on a bass. The most I paid for an electric bass was 3900 euro and that was for my fretless MK1 4 years ago or so. I am even afraid to take my Wals to a gig these days…to afraid something will happen to it or that it will be stolen.
I doubt I could ever afford another Wal, lucky to have gotten mine back in 1985. It would be nice to have a second one (fretted), so I won’t have to keep swapping the neck out. I don’t play gigs anymore, but wouldn’t hesitate to bring the Wal if I did.
I gig my one and only Wal. I sold my Mk1 back to it’s original owner when I got my new Mk2. I’m just a working musician, any and all gigs. My upright gives me the most grief. It’s old, fragile, expensive.
I'm in the "glad I got it when I did" club because I'd have a hard time spending that kind of money on a used one. Though I *do* wish I had gotten on the list years ago since I don't think that's gonna happen either.
But it does make a Ken Smith look more affordable, so there is that!

I just bought a six string Ken Smith for 1/4 of the price of a second hand Wal!

I've owned a US Smith, nice bass and great neck profile but no where near the same universe in tone.
No, wasn't suggesting they were similar in anything other than comparatively astronomical used price.
That said, I recently got a Jazz pickup-version Smith and I really dig it. Feels great and sounds killer. I know it was the "cheap" USA Smith but I think it stands as its own thing. But that's for a whole other Club thread lol
