Wal Bass Club.

Had most of those as a selection... my first initial facing I had wanted was a high figured camphor burl, initially Paul said yes when I placed my deposit, but when it came time for obtaining the facing, where he gets his timbre no longer had any available - so he sent several options to see it any tickled my fancy.... guess I didn't post this here and only at the Wal FB group...my apologies!

It is hard :roflmao: but applying @graphics1988 's cutout patterns can help because you can kind of approximate where the grains and patterns will hit. Here they are for your facing choices:

York Gum burl

Chestnut burl

Thanks again @graphics1988 for making the cutout patterns, they helped me with my own choice so trying to pay it forward.

Love the Chestnut.
Great to see there’s more facing options out there.

When will Paul finally open up orders again?

Yeah I like that madrone too. Different. Did you just ask to see a little of everything?

I asked Paul for some highly figured options. I specified an interest in timbers with sapwood in the center for a neck-thru look and/or anything with a darker red look to it. In another life I’d have the money for 7 Wal basses and I’d say make me one of each, but right now I think I’m split between the Madrone and chestnut Burl, though I know the Shedua would really look nice after Paul worked his magic.. they all look great though, it’s a really tough choice.

man...i would've so picked this one for mine :crying:
where was this one back in December??

When I email Paul back I’ll ask him to set aside those facings for your next order :D I really like that one too, but I think the dark red and rich figuring on the madrone are calling me, plus I think the gold hardware I’ve selected would accent that dark red the best of these options. But that chestnut Burl, it’s got it all. This is really tough haha, what a glorious problem to have!

I know it’s totally subjective but why not make it unique? Shedua is awesome but how many Wals going way back have those facings? It’s like Walnut from the 80s. It’s classic.

I’m glad Paul is going for some different tops. Maybe we’ll see a Masur Birch top?
Love hearing Elm is an option. I’d love to see more Redwood Burl!!!!

Thanks for the shout-out - that was pretty cool - appreciate that.
The biggest problem is going to be the wood choice - man, those are ALL outstanding! Clear gloss, I'd probably lean towards a burl(maybe narrowing to the elm burl - it looks SO tough)..if there's going to be a transparent stain/gloss..i'd hit the maple...awesome choices no matter what.
Cheers fellas - thx

Yeah I’m sure the shedua would indeed look amazing but I echo your sentiment; there’s already so many shedua wals, I really wanted something unique that not many people had requested. And it’s funny you mention redwood burl, as that was a timber I requested, and probably why I’m drawn to the madrone. But the elm and chestnut burl also look amazing. It’s really a no lose situation :)

I was initially thinking of tinting the quilted maple a darker auburn color but seeing how glorious the other facings are I think I might have to pass up the maple this time. That’s not the worst thing though, as there are many basses out there that feature gorgeous quilted maple if I ever wanted to add one to the arsenal… these other facings on the other hand are much more unique. I feel like if I pass on the madrone, someone else is going to make me regret it.

That madrone is the bomb! paduak is nice too, but I am a fan of the knots. Also I am not so much a burl guy. So madrone would be my choice out of this selection.
Are these all these premium 'extra pay' woods?
In my spec sheet Paul gave me an estimated range of prices based on the suggestions I gave him, but no final number just yet. I feel the shedua and maple for instance would not be as pricey as the burl selections, just my guess based on previous custom builds I’ve entertained.

got very tempted on this one -- if I didn't have my build almost done, i'd probably make a play for this one. pretty surprised that its been sitting already for 3 days and no buyers. i bought my fretless Mk2 from this guy back in 2014. if someone wants to buy this outside Reverb and deal privately to negate paying the added tax from reverb hit me up and i'll connect you. fyi - he's firm on his price.
