I´ve just finished my first studio recording with my MK I.
Had great expectations about its recorded tone and honestly the results were impressive.
I wanted to achieve an agressive/punchy fingerstyle tone (think Flea in BSSM or Geddy in Power Windows/Hold your Fire) and although I lack of their talent and skills, the bass sounds amazing: punchy, articulated, growly and big at the same time.
I´ve been lucky enough to record with several basses (different Fender Jazzes, several Warwicks, Stingrays, Zon, etc.) and could never get a tone like this.
Now we´ll face the mixing process, where will probably get buried under a plethora of distorted guitars, but that´s another story. Will try to post the bass/drum track once I receive it.

Could you please tell for what are push/pulls used for? I can`t trace complete scheme from picture.
And please do you know was it originally passive or someone removed preamp out?

Yes Pete has built passive Customs before. If you look through the Registry you can find at least one or two others.

My '92 passive Wal was always passive, and custom ordered that way by the original owner , and I am the 3rd owner.
The difference with my passive Mk I that makes it unique, and a one of a kind, is that the push/pull goes from full on humbucker (down) to single coil mode (up), and that black poly bass (which was the other passive Custom Mk I made) does NOT have the custom single coil push/pull set up that Wal made in the bass I have. All Wall basses are Series-parallel, and do NOT go single coil. The single coil mode in my MK I passive sounds so damn cool and unlike a Jazz bass. Thicker, meatier and yet very punchy and still Wal-like in the single coil mode. A unique beast indeed! Also, the other feature that makes my MK I unique is the original owner had Pete make the body thinner (1 3/8" thick) than the normal stock Wals (1.5" thick) which kept the weight down to just under 9 lbs which is light for a Wal. I believe this is the only Wal made as above detailed. And it has the cool treated birdseye maple facings. There's a fretless MK I '83 (in Germany) on ebay now that also has treated birdseye maple facings, and very nice it is!

The 70's model Wal. Bigger headstock and had pickguards.
They came in single or dual pickup versions: Pro I and Pro II.
They also were available in passive or active: Pro II and Pro IIe, etc...
There was a 'reissue' Pro during the 80's, but only as single pickup passive models, and they had no pickguard.
Hey guys, I need a little Wal advice. Since all the Wal 4 strings I'm finding up sale lately are fretless (and while I have a cheapo fretless Jazz I play around with, I want frets...), I was thinking maybe I could buy one and have it refretted. Is it wrong to do that to a Wal? 
Has anyone compared a fretted ebony board with the usual rosewood board for fretted Wals?
Or would it be better to purchase a fretted neck from Paul? Is that possible?
The 19 months wait and close to 7500$ (including shipping/customs/exchange rate fees) I'd have to shell out for a new Wal are making me twitchy to buy one used..

Paul eMailed me that new necks are approximately 1100 pounds each. This was for a 5-string Mark II....
you should take a look at basschat.co.uk, there is a bass guitar selling forum in there, too. They usually go somewhere around 3000 gbp, that's about 4500$. I don't know what shipping / insurance / taxes add to that for you, but maybe that's a possibility.
