The blocks and headstock overlay are Purple Heart. The neck is a standard wal make with the ebony fingerboard. You can't see from the photos but I had the back of the neck finished in black, too.

On one level I think it looks really cool.....but wal has always been about functionality ....for me personally I think it's too pimped out....whenever I tried to get my luthier to do blocks and binding he hit the roof..... Can't help thinking the founding members might have had the same attitude on this one.

Love it!!!!! It's great to see this club with new builds. I know other guys here including myself hesitating to make that jump, but seeing all these builds just makes the little guy on my shoulder say "just do it!!!"
+1 on the headstock!!! Please post more drooling pics whenever you get them
I dunno, I kinda disagree... Part of what makes the old Mk1s and Pro basses so cool is just how minimal they look. I like the fact that Paul is updating the design, making it fancier, especially on the Mk2s and Mk3s; it just allows the older Wals to stand out more.
.....And btw, that bass is unreal looking. I wanna see pictures of the back!

I just placed my order Monday. hope you sont mind a couple more questions, but how long did it take paul to complete from start to finish? your quilt looks awesome, what was the up charge for that grade of maple? how much did your duty charges come out to percentage wise?

Paul was more than happy to accomodate me on most all requests that i had. He was amazing to work with. I also originally asked for a maple fingerboard which he would not do for me. He (and perhaps I'm wrong about this) seemed almost reluctant to do the block inlays but not because it was relatively un-wal-like as some people have pointed out. I think he objected simply because from a luthier's standpoint they were, as he put it, "tedious" and "a pain in the ass" (or something like that, i can't remember exactly the words he chose). Either way, he did it. They were definitely not cheap. And for the record i originally wanted more standard circular inlays that were customized and he was very interested in working with me on those. I eventually changed my mind.
The maple did not cost me any more than the standard quilted top charge. I believe the shipping was around 300 pounds but don't quote me exactly on that either. I don't have the specs sheet in front of me.

Also, because someone asked- It took him about 15 months or so to finish. However, i ended up needing way more time because i don't make too much money and needed all the time i could get to save up haha. So he ended up putting the bass on hold for me for a few months so i could catch up to him in the end. Again, really great of him to work with me on that.

Ouch!!!! So that doesn't include customs tax?? When I ordered my used 5er from the gallery UK, I got my customs bill from FedEx a couple weeks after....
Interesting about the fretboard though! I guess Paul doesn't want to stray away from ebony and rosewood.
I did ask him about a cocobolo facing Mk II and he told me he doesn't supply it regularly but wouldn't mind doing the footwork for a supplier or if i supplied it - once I'm ready.
I'll go with the camp that it's good for Paul to start adding his own signature to the designs. He probably has more business than he can handle but evolution is good.
On another note, I kept my ProIIe stateside for updates. Too expensive just to ship to the UK. I think it was 500 or $600. So It's at aoguitars for a refinish, defret and major cleanup. Hopefully I see it this year!

Actually joking there, Pros I know, the "4", not so much. I have a ProIIe but there are some odd birds out there.

The 70's model Wal. Bigger headstock and had pickguards.
They came in single or dual pickup versions: Pro I and Pro II.
They also were available in passive or active: Pro II and Pro IIe, etc...
There was a 'reissue' Pro during the 80's, but only as single pickup passive models, and they had no pickguard.

That bass although fairly uncharacteristic for a wal does make sense from a weight distribution point of view ...although I'm not a great fan of that what I call the galleon style.
