As a professional bass player my whole life, one of my dreams growing up in England was to have a Wal bass. All the top players played them, Percy Jones, Geddy Lee, Mick Karn, McCartney and many others, and there was this unique sound that sounded like no other! As soon as I had enough money I made the trip up to Electric Wood in High Wycombe and met with Wal and with Pete. Wal built me my Mark II bass to order - Wenge faces; I picked out the wood, custom V shaved neck, and they invited me to, and I went up there several times to check on the process. about 5 weeks later I finally took possession in 1983 and brought it home. In 1985 Wal built me a fretless spare neck for my bass and hand delivered it to me at the Town House studios where I was recording an album with Ozzy Osbourne. Wal and Pete were wonderful.
Over the years my work has taken me everywhere in the world. I was one of the first endorsees of Stuart Spector basses and I still have 7 of them. When Stuart took a hiatus, I endorsed Fernandes, and then in 1997 I switched my endorsement to MusicMan where I have been ever since.
My Wal sits in a case sometimes for months at a time and when I get home I break it out. Each time I am amazed at how the sound blows everything away. It cuts through the heaviest guitars in rock, it sings through jazz fusion lines and the slap sound runs neck to neck with Alembic (although with a lot more low end power!)
People do not seem to like the look from photos but it really grows on you and once you play it you fall in love with the uniqueness. Mine is not too heavy, maybe 9-10 lbs but I manage it pretty easily.
The electrics are not complicated to operate but very sophisticated in design. Basically, you roll off the neck PUP filter to give you the blend that you want between wood and low end, with an option to boost the cutoff point, then you roll off the bridge PUP, and boost if you like, to give you the mid tone and then blend the two. You can also add the pick attack by pulling the volume knob. Through any amp you will rule the low end and compliment any guitar sound in your band. Just amazing.
I have some great basses, including a custom Roger Giffin, but out of over 50 basses that I have, the Wal is the one that never ceases to surprise me and that inspires me like a new bass anytime it comes out. I am reluctant to take it on the road, but I will break it out for local or one off fly gigs and it always grabs attention.
Do yourself a favor - try one of these out at least once in your lifetime! Oh... and please feel free to give me a number!

I was a BIG Ozzy fan back in the day. In fact I remember buying The Ultimate Sin the day it came out in Canada. It was vinyl and I still have it to this day. My fav album cover (next to BATM)

I've got a MK III 4 and another one in the oven with Paul (due to August \o/) and I'm trying to get exactly that Power Windows tone...
As Caca spoke before, I usually try to get my own sound, but that tone blows me away, although it's not the best GL's tone over the years in most bassist's opinion..(it's, in mine!)
So, any clues about it?
Lots of compressors??
Do you guys have experience in using 30-90 Rotosounds on your wals? Do you think this would help? Paul told me he doesn't recommend going any lower than 40-100s..
Please let me know.

The .030-.090 guage strings are something I tried when I got my first Wal. They do have a certsin twang that will get you the rest of the way to that Power Windows tone, though I found that they didn't have as much low end as I wanted for all the other possible Wal tones, and I eventually went back to heavier guages and settled for "close enough" on the PW tone.
Just picked up a set of FM's for the black Geddy...will let you know how they sound or post a sound clip
I'm in the process of trying out various strings. I finally decided to defret my mkii and was pleased I did it. I have a set of xl chrome flats on at the moment and so far they don't sound like flats ....in fact they have a nice detailed mwah thing going on which is great.
Thinking about half rounds but they are really thin on the ground.
Also playing around with the xlr output and getting some very pleasing di recordings. Probably the best bass tones I have recorded yet.
