The satin black neck sounds interesting. Mine is glossy:
Schedua facings, magahony core, ebony fretboard, black gloss neck.
(oh yeah, I like to show that off)

Hi fellow walnuts!
Here's my latest acquisition: a Wal MKII 5 from 1995.
It featured a slightly warped fretted rosewood board and I had it turn into a fretless at Bassline Basses Krefeld/Germany by master luthier Rüdiger Ziesemann: Invalid Link Removed
He put an old, gorgeous-looking cocobolo fingerboard on it and now the Wal, with its walnut tops and mahogany core just sounds unreal.
As far as the looks go, well, see for yourself

Saaawwweeeaatt!!! I've actually grown quite enamored with Cocobolo so seeing your fretless cocobolo neck on a Wal is a treat
It's a shame Paul doesn't offer that choice of timbre for facings. I actually had a NBD earlier this week with a cocobolo bass

Actually cocobolo is a very unstable wood to work with, it tends to crack and split, fall apart.
Funny!! I've read quite the contrary actually. Plus why would it be the typical 'go to' lumber for Alembics that go for $6,000+
Oh well everyone has an opinion so I respect that :footinmouth:
well farts, that's disappointing that you can't get cocobolo. I was thinking about asking for that.

If you were to buy and mail Paul the wood for your facings, I'm sure he would do it.
I remember sending him this pic and he gave me his min size he needed if I were to mail him this Blistered Canadian Maple!!

It could be that its difficulty to work with is the reason for the high price of it as an option on Alembics (the high option cost is objective fact [$1,200 option on models for which it isn't standard using the online custom quote generator]; its difficulty to work with remains to be seen, but I'm just offering a reasonable explanation). Though it's more likely that Paul & co. just don't have an affordable source for it.

okay sorry folks! Nice PJ! How's the satin feel compared to gloss on the neck as far as playability and feel. These colored Wal Mk IIs are great! Man I wish I nabbed that green one couple months ago

Wow Bass42. Those are hot basses. Some great examples of the variations available. Are you able to please describe any differences between the MKII 4 and MKIII 4 in terms of tone? Do the quite different finishes and subtly different body shapes have much influence over the tone?
I'm umming are arring over these two models, woods, finish, etc. Both models have beautiful body shape but as mentioned above, I too prefer the iconic Wal 4 string headstock.

Also, how do you like your gold hardware in the long run?
Do they shine after the years? Or they get easily stained?
I have a black gloss MK3 due to august but I dont know if I get chrome or gold HW.

Two of my Wals are 20+ years-young and the gold hardware is still as new.
