So sent the ultimatum- and the seller almost immediately responded saying he works long hours would send pics tonight- if not I'm moving on. We'll see- with all the times he responded with contact you later it could've been done already!

It's easy to set your mind on an instrument and willfully ignore some of the warning signs- thanks for confirming my suspensions TMB! And if any of you WALers want to part with your 4 string MKII shoot me a PM!

Oh well, if it doesn't work out I'm really hoping to get a 4 string MKII anyways but those seem to be harder to come by on the used market.

The fact he offered to arrange a pick up makes this a little better!

But because of lack of communication and fresh pics its very hard for you to determine the overall condition of this bass.

I would ask the seller this question......."Please take some HI-RES pics of ANY cosmetic flaws, wear,dings,scratches, so i can determine the value of your MKII"

Ask for a clear pic of the backplate, control cavity and any missing or worn parts (ie:screws)

Is the original case included in the sale and whats its condition? EDIT (yes this looks like an orig ata flight case that was offered as an option at one point by Wal)

Unfortunately todays economy is not on the side of a Wal seller these days. You can show him this link

This MKII 5'er sold recently for $3,150 that didnt have alot of player wear and only had 3 things going against the sale price

-finish hairline cracks on back of neck headstock (common for a wal of this age, that doesnt effect playability)
-plastic truss rod insert/cover (since Wal has started back up...this will be easy to replace)
-non-Wal hardshell case

Its probably the best price i have seen for a MKII 5....unless you want to fly to England for a beat up one that comes with a gig bag and only local pick up!....lol

MKII 4's are the rarest that come up for sale and fetch the higher prices. Even in todays economy one thats in great shape with orig case should fetch $5500 and up

Yup, we might see average about four MkII 4 stringers come up for sale per year, and thats between the US and overseas. In the grand scheme that's hardly any, and overall 4-string Wals in general get snatched up really quick, much quicker than the 5's.

That ebay Shedua 5 string at $3150 was a really great price, but in all fairness, that guy relisted it three or four times and seemed really desperate to unload it on the last relist and totally low-balled it. Also not only that, but there were three Shedua 5 stringers all listed at the same time in the US, another in Canada, and another in UK.

That sir would be the last reason to ever order a Wal....shame to even hear it.

We have four seasons in Canada here and in between cutting grass or shovelling snow or raking leaves...I would push my lawn mower down the street everyday if I needed money just to keep my Wal...I did brake jobs and guitar set- ups on the side a few years back just so I could buy a Bass Whammy when they were going for a bazillion dollars on eBay.

The process you have to go through to order and wait for a new Wal these days .....to hear that....should be ashamed of yourself

Don't worry, I already know the process you have to go through to get a new Wal. My order's been in for a couple of months and I sacrificed a couple of basses I really loved to make it happen. I'm certainly not doing this with the intention of flipping it. But all things being equal, if I'm on the fence between two models and one costs roughly the same but has a $1000 higher resale value I aint ashamed to make that decision.

for question 1. I think we can only guess but I think it depends on the song. for stuff like big money it sounds like he has both pickups on with the resonance filters engaged at 10. but for something like "time stand still" it sounds like he's favoring the bridge pickup with the filter rolled back and the resonance engaged somewhere around 5 or 6 on the dial.

for question 2 I believe that's a "no".

How do you come to this conclusion?...almost the same cost but re-sale would be a $1,000 higher?

Re-sale value on new Paul Wals drop significantly once they arrive on NA soil. To put in perspective for you....

There is a TB member who is selling a Paul Wal on Walbassesnaturally and its been for sale for 3months at over a $1,200 less than its original cost. It has been barely played......In fact he is claiming that JC used this particular bass at rehearsal before leaving for Australia.

With the build options/shipping/duty/taxes i bet it was $7700+ to get it here and nobody is biting at $6500

i may be wrong.....but based on the context, i think he may have meant between the Mk I and Mk II in the used market, not commissioning a build and having sent here just to sell at a $1000+ purchased value. I think the idea was that Mk I's are selling between $4k -$4.8k on average and Mk II selling between $4.8k - $5.5k. As a new build they are pretty much close in price as he pointed out, so i'm thinking that's what Jim meant, no? :hiding:

If you read his post again....the subject i got out of it was

-new builds
-two models and one costs roughly the same but has a $1000 higher resale value

Im not too sure of Paul's starting price on a MKII, but i imagine its more than the MKI.....My question would be if you were to commission a MKI and a MKII using the exact same build options and woods...one is not going to "cost roughly the same but has a $1000 higher resale value"?.....I guess anything is possible depending on a buyer and how horny he would be on one bass over the other.

Knowing the "out the door" price difference would be the best starting point before guessing on re-sale value...but i dont know this info :hmm:

(haven't asked a quote for an Mk 1 but if i recall its £3650 as well)
4 string Mk 2 starts at £3650
4 string Mk 3 starts at £3850

Fretted Ebony fingerboards are +£150
Gloss black neck finish + £220
Block inlays + £550
Alternate to standard facings:
The upcharge would depend on what it is but generally + £250

Interesting!.....i always assumed that £3650 was for the MKI!
But it does look like that would be for both!

So yea, one would def have a higher resale value using the same woods

With a VERY minor eq adj or set-up/tone knob adj they sound and play the same.....so if it was me i would pick a MKII over a MKI

My first MKI and my MKII were 21years apart on build dates...one Lacewood (Australian...similar to our Maple) and the other American Walnut and with not much tinkering sounded identical!

If your on the fence J.K i would pick the MKII ;)
