Wal sound

Hi guys,

This is particularly for Wal owners and those with experience with this bass.

I know only a Wal sounds like a Wal...but can a Wal sound like a Fender?

I should get my first Wal with Paul in a couple of weeks.

I played some Wals, but never had one...

I' in a Rush project right now and need to use it for the old songs as well...

I just wonder if I could emulate some Rick or Fender sounds with some eq and overdrive...

It's not so simple. Maybe I didn't explain my purposes.

I bought a Wal because a want a Wal tone. However, I may need a different sound, and I want to know if a Wal can deliver it.

If you did a 2 hr gig with rush covers, would you bring another bass to cover the old stuff? Or all you need is your Wal?

In other words, how versatile is this bass?

And also, a Ferrari is not just for racing...you can use it to take your girlfriend for a nice dinner....

All you need is the Wal. No, it's never really going to sound like a Fender but quite frankly, the only people who will notice this are the other bassists in the audience.

This. I've seen it happen with a lot of gear. I once had a seasoned bassist complement my all tube svt and how warm it sounded... All he was hearing was the DI of a svt350 (solidstate) from way back so he couldn't notice visually it wasn't the all tuber, but he digged the sound. It'll probably be the same with the wal, I can't imagine you getting a bad sound from it.

Seriously, just play that thing like you stole it, and have fun.

Look, it's quite simple with Wal's active electronics and pickups:
Slap some Rotosounds on it grab a pick,
Sit for an hour or so with a buddy playing a jazz along side you, experiment tweaking the controls on the Wal and get it dialed in to your liking. remember the setting and viola: Fender sound at your finger tips. Or just get a Fender for those moments.
Though with my old pro custom I didn't want it to sound like a Fender, cause it was a Wal !

A younger me circa '83 with my MIJ Jazz Bass and of course my now gone Wal Custom !:crying::crying::crying:

I used to have a wal and they are pretty Flexible. I posted a thread on here I believe for some P bass settings on it wal owners had. I got a few responses I recall. I'm sure if you learn the eq system and spend some time with the bass and I'm sure you will be able to cop the tones you are after. Be sure to post some pics when your bass arrives!
