I used to work with a guy who claimed to be a "speed walker."
I didn't really need to be cured of any interest in that activity, but if I had, his personality would have done the job.

1960 and 1904. I just watched the replay, it was sweet. The US men’s eight looks really good this year too, their final is this weekend. My brother rowed in an eight in college and I remember watching him in the Olympic trials a zillion years ago, when the US just sent whichever crew won the trials.
Simone Biles...gold. Suni Lee...bronze. floor. Awesome performance from both.
Our younger daughter went to Paris this week, with a couple others in her crew, to watch one of their best friends compete. They've all been tight since they were about five years old.
This friend happens to be Maia Weintraub of the US Fencing Team, and yesterday they won GOLD!!! The team beat Italy by six points, exactly the margin by which Maia won her two segments combined. She was fantastic. It's amazing, and we're all blown away by the whole thing. It's safe to say our daughter and her friends are having a good time over there.
Just two weeks ago, Maia was in our kitchen chowing down on pizza. Philly pizza--the new diet of champions!

French swimmer Leon Marchand is the star of the Olympics thus far, and my favorite moment thus far is Marchand winning the 200m butterfly.
At 1:27 in this video, Marchand is almost a full body length behind the leader, and in the final 50, he digs deep and pulls out the win. I'm even more psyched about it because the butterfly is my favorite stroke!

I watched them in 76 & 80, and maybe a few years after that. It was a big deal then, every 4 years it was amateur athletes competing on a world stage.
Now (at least to me) it seems like it's a bi-yearly exhibition of professional athletes competing in some sports I've never heard of.
I believe Simone Biles is one of the top 5 greatest athletes of all time, not just the greatest gymnast.
In a team sport like, say, football, you can stink it up for a half and still come back and win a championship. In an individual sport like, say, tennis, you can stink it up for a set or two and still win a championship. In women's gymnastics, if you stink it up for even one of the four rotations, you can forget about winning the all-around gold. In an individual event, one major balance check could cost you the gold or even keep you off the podium altogether.
Simone Biles has been dominating this very exacting sport for over 10 years. The fact that Biles is still dominating at age 27 while most gymnasts are past their prime and often retired by their early 20s is phenomenal. Not to mention the fact that she has five skills named after her!
