Warmoth Releases Mooncaster Short Scale Bass!

Saw this on YouTube this Morning! They've finally released a Mooncaster bass.

Unfortunately the options are limited (One pickup choice; TV Jones Thunder'Trons, and one Bridge Choice; Hipshot D) but still looks like a cool, versatile bass.

I think I'd prefer it with the Starcaster headstock but you can't always get what you want!

Keen to see this involved in some builds!!!

My best guess is initial demand. If enough people vote with their dollars then the options will begin to open up.

I would love one with a set of Darkstars and a good preamp, maybe a Sadowsky. Maybe with an unlined fretless ebony neck and pearl binding...

I don't believe that Darkstars are a routing option on any Warmoth bodies. May very well be a machining-related issue.

While I like the concept per se, I just threw in a fairly basic set of specs and came up with more than a grand in wood alone. The current scarcity of options is also something I'm not pleased about. So I guess I'll re-visit the idea in a year or so and see where things stand then...

And they are offering it left handed! I have been hoping for this body shape for basses ever since they started offering the guitar version!
I am not thrilled about the pickup selection but that might be possible to work around.

Interesting. Warmoth did have DS3 as an option on their site. I'm sure their CNC machine is still capable of executing the route. Perhaps it is an oversight on their part to not delete the link or it is a simple mistake? Evidence of it's existence can be seen in the link below, and I am fairly sure it was a $50 option. It is the next logical step for this style of instrument.

I definitely didn't imagine them being inexpensive. A fully bound, chambered Warmoth body of any shape will cost over $500. I still dig it.

I guess that I haven't played with their stuff in a long, long, long time...I was somewhat of an early adopter of the brand back in the late 80s...and yes, I understand that a lot has changed. Still...

Don't get me wrong, I like the concept. Having said that, by the time I provision everything the way I want to, I'll be able to pick up a 60s Starfire in good shape for the same amount of money or come extremely close...and such an equation is an absolute non-starter *for me*...

A mounting problem, maybe? TV Jones' pickups are made to be hung over a hollow/semi-hollow body by the mounting rings - a la Gretsch basses/guitars. Is that an option for DarkStars? Just askin'... Otherwise, for me personally, my only complaint about a Mooncaster would be the scale. I have several short scale hollow/ semi-hollow body basses, and don't really have room in my herd for another one. However... now that I think about it, I don't have any medium scale basses at all...:whistle:

I would thin so since most of the "classics" with the originals were hollow bodies.
