WARNING PF 50t does NOT fit inside all Portaflex cabs!!!

Jake wasn't proposing that Ampeg fix the OP's issue. He was suggesting that Ampeg bears culpability for creating the impression of full compatibility. Read the complete post before commenting.

Love these comments. But if everyone "read the complete post before posting" then there would be no need for Talkbass!!. Harhar

I always appreciate a heads-up on compatibility issues like this, so even if people disagree about Ampeg's involvement, it's good that you are trying to warn others about it so the same doesn't happen to them.

If an official product video says "It's compatible with your old Portaflex cabinets" then Ampeg is in the wrong, IMO. How hard would it be to say "Compatible with late 201X cabinets and up"?

Nice mod on the crossbrace OP! :rollno:
There's a lot to be said for using the right tool for the job, and your picture is worth a thousand words. :wideyed:
Maybe it's just me, but if I didn't have the right tools but had a friend that did I'd sure be calling that friend for help before I hacked the crap out of a structural member in my newly purchased bass cab. o_O

"It's also the perfect solution for bass players that love their current Portaflex rigs but want to step up to an all tube head and still retain that convenient flip top design, perfect for that as well".

In context, it's clear that the use of the word "current" by the Ampeg employee in their promotional Youtube video means: "the Portaflex rig that you currently own." I don't think that the Ampeg employee who did that product demonstration video knew that their was an issue with backwards compatibility, or he would have stated it. I don't think it's a conspiracy, I just think that it was an oversight by Ampeg.

Intentional or not, that video is misleading. This would not have been: "If you love your current Portaflex rig, but want to step up to an all tube head and still retain that convenient flop top design, this is perfect for that, provided your rig's cabinet is a later production model."

To the OP: Thanks for the heads up! Although Ampeg may not be legally liable for misleading you with that video, it would have been nice if they clarified the situation for all of their current and potential customers. Sorry that happened to you!

Every time I come to a crossroads where funny and logical intersect, funny wins.

I'd just like to add another "Thanks Mr. AgressivePassiv!" to the mix. I haven't had to deal with Ampeg, but GK definitely took the high road and helped me out with a product that was bought used. They didn't have to, but they did. Seems like it might have been worthwhile for Ampeg to do the same, since this thread wouldn't exist if they had stepped up. Bad publicity is bad publicity. IMO, the video is misleading and even more reason for them to help you.

The heck with trying to protect a corporation, somebody needed to protect the bass cab! Did you see the hatchet job...

I'll take function over form in this case. With the lid closed you wont see it. The head fits inside now. Sounds like a success. Would I have done it differently? Sure. Do I judge OP for how he did it? Nope.

I would be concerned about the structural (and sonic) integrity of the enclosure, though, after taking out a good portion of a cross-support bar.

That being said, I do agree that it would have been nice if Ampeg would have mentioned (somewhere) that the PF20/50T may not fit in certain of the very first PF cabs, but that it fits in all current PF cabs. Heck, it might have helped them sell a few more cabs!

The original issue is sad. Valid point by OP, with concern for other TB members who could also be affected. It's a good heads up.

The fix is equally sad. That cab looks ruined, and was sacrificed in haste and anger. Now, the OP has a double punishment: The wrong cab for the head; a cab with a ruined brace, and resulting lower resale value.

I would have sold that cab before hacking it, and probably would have said sayonara to everything else Ampeg at that point.

Not a happy Ampeg story. That in itself is sad due to a saying in customer service, marketing, and public relations: one bad story with legs easily displaces a thousand good stories.

Spot on!
