One of the only things I didn't like about the movie was the scene with Rorschach killing the guy with the butchers knife. I thought that in the graphic novel when he set the place on fire spoke more to Rorschach's character than in the movie.

I loved that part! after seeing what that man did to the little girl, you want to see the man die a bloody death! Rorschach dispatching him with a butcher knife greatly appealed to my (and everybody else's in the audience) sense of justice. Everybody in the theater cheered for that part.

I think burning alive would be a crueler punishment, I mean with a butcher's knife one hit and you'll probably at least lose consciousness.

^ True. While maybe not "justice," it certainly has an agreeable symmetry.

I wanted to watch the full director's cut but had to make do with two and a half hours. I managed to see Rorschach chopping into the guy's head. What did I miss.

The handcuffs and fire death would have been better, only because it would have showed that Rorschach was a much more methodical, demented individual... it takes time to plan that out, regardless of whether you've seen Mad Max...

The "Meat cleaver" just showed that he was angry...

its explained in the comic. It's part of a fancy dress that the customer didnt like when he used to work at a clothing store, so he took it home, played with it, and forgot about it until he decided to use it as a mask.

but in the comic he's more of a calculating sleuth type of guy, see he's got a twisted mind, bu hes methodical..
the meat cleaver thing is just not something he would to... he would never lose control, and sink to the level of the sociopaths brand of violence...

I like the meat cleaver choice. The hacksaw thing, after Mad Max and Saw, is played.

I finished the graphic novel yesterday and although the story in the movie is good the story in the novel was better.

And FYI there is a black freighter DVD out at the end of this month! It has under the hood stuff too!

As always, but I enjoyed the ending of the movie better. The book ending was a lame Stephen King Out Limits rip off (thus the nod to the show to those that are in the know)

Yeah, the ending made sense in the movie and it gave an actual reason for Jon to leave. Also i think it was a little more believable (not that the whole superhero genre is all that believable )

Special fabric, by Veidt,made into a dress for customer Kitty Genovese.She didn't like it. The tie in bears weight if you know who she was. Ironic twist.

just to be clear, the songs were part of the GN - each chapter ended with a quote from a song. It's not like they were picked by the movie makers for some random reason.

Not quite. Several of the songs were in the graphic novel, while most of the chapters ended with quotes (Einstein, Nitsche, a quote from the bible). Luftballons and Sound of Silence are NOT in the GN, neither was the Leonard Cohen tune.

So yes, All Along the Watchtower was in the GN so the movie makers included it. Pretty sure none of the other tunes from the GN are in the movie, so every other song was picked by the movie makers for whatever reason.

the fire was supposed to obliterate everything - it was on purpose, supposed to cleanse. rorshach's not about justice at all, and only secondarily about vengeance. rorshach's about purity, and the fire was a symbol of that, the purging, cleansing of the unclean.

But isnt that night also the night that Kovacs 'dies' so in a way he was only Rorschach after he killed the guy so the that particular killing was impure and more about justice.
