We got bumped for.....Pitbull?

Mommy told you that over and over, I'll bet. I've never been booed, and the only time I remember booing anyone was at a Padre's game where Rosanne Barr did a disgraceful rendition of the National Anthem. I think there were six people at the game who did not boo.

BOOOOOOOO MUNJI!!!! BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

There, I was the first!
:D

Don't get me wrong, I'm not some burly hardcore biker type.
Not at all.
I don't care for that "Harley lifestyle" deal with all the leather and rough look.
I just like bikes and like to ride.
Sure, I own a black Harley leather riding jacket. But it's not one emblazed with a large logo or stuff on it.

I also hang as well with the rice burning crowd as I do with the Harley crowd.
As I do with metal guys and jazz guys too.

There are image concerned players- Look it and talk it. Be it Jazz, Metal, Country or anything.
It's the "every Italian is "connected" and every black guy is from the ghetto" types for example, who live through those images (and perpetuate them) for social acceptance/attention on a large scale.
But those who are in it, see right through it quickly.

The OP pretty much did, IMO, live to an "image" of metal.
"I'm a badass. I'll take his beer and punch him in the face, then go get high".
To most, that's what "metal" kinda is.
Again, to those really in it, that was a joke.

If it's not image, why was it a big deal when James Hetfield cut his hair short?????

Tell me I'm wrong - but doesn't the above read like lyrics to a song or a modern poem???

Someone quick - Write a song to these words!!!

WOW!!! Can TB take the collective stick out of your collective dupa!!! Great story, well written, even the booing at the end. Screw that guy for not learning the real "whom the bell tolls" line. That hack and his hack of a band was making bank. Sorry but hack is hack. I learned that line note for note at the age of 14 and never once got paid for it. I think it was a proper ending to a great mis-adventure. The drugs and booze make for a real and interesting part of the story.

Like the poster said, haters gonna hate. Was this the Crazy Donkey by chance?

This post is very metal.

Crikey, reading The Voiceless's posts really shows up why the semi-******** metalhead stereotype continues to exist.

It really is sad, because most guys out there aren't bothered about the macho-stereotype or having to portray anything of the image The Voiceless seems to enjoy. In all honesty, most of them are guys who just like to listen to music.

While I don't expect anyone to like all the same music as I do, I think its a tad foolish to judge all metalheads, or even most metalheads to be anything like The Voiceless. He isn't representative of the average metal fan any more than the unemployed, broke guy, scrounging off his girlfriend and playing a gig to four people stereotype is really representative of the average jazz musician.

The reason stereotypes like this persist is because "the squeaky wheel gets oiled", people like The Voiceless make so much noise that you can't hear any of the normal guys who just dig the music underneath it.

Stereotypes are sometimes stereotypes for good reasons; Is it not in the "metal culture" to be confrontational, angry, strutting and irreverent, just as you might expect a "jazz cat" to be arrogant, condescending, bookish and nerdy?

For me, if I'm looking for anger in music, I'll look to old punk. I'm not wild about it musically, but that it actually impacted culture means it had some value - can the same be said about "metal"?

Honestly, most of the metal guys I know, (thats quite a few) are the least confrontational and angry people I know.

I'll let you in on a secret.....you know those supposedly stereotypical metalheads you're laughing at? The real metalheads are laughing at them too.

Expecting the average metalhead to be like that is like expecting the average dedicated biker to be in a roving bike gang, going round vandalising and fighting, in fact, the stereotyped biker is expected to be "confrontational, angry, strutting and irreverent"....as I'm sure most bikers don't fit that "biker" stereotype, nor do most of the metal scene.

You're probably right. So when I laugh at "metalheads", I'm not laughing at you. I'm laughing at those knuckleheads wearing all that leather and acting faux hard. Those folks ARE funny.

I like this post. I'll address each one individually.

I expect that if I'm booked to play, I play. There were people expecting to see us that night. If that's asking too much, I guess I'm a diva and our fans are needy.

There's a huge difference between complaining and sticking up for yourself. When we found out about it I didn't cry about it. I drank more, rocked out to the band playing, and got some smoochies from a chick...that actually kinda makes me the man.

I was bragging?

If you're supposed to do your job and you're not I'm gonna call you out on it.

Once again, I was bragging? It was irrelevant to the story but it happened and therefore, part of the story. Get off the pedestal, I smoke weed and it's AWESOME!

I meant maybe, if I had no intent of playing I'd be wrong. If the night went smoother and I was up to it, I would have been playing Sabbath. I was willing to get past wanting to punch that dude in the face to get my Geezer on.

I'm guessing this one is in reference to the other bass player and I'm done beating a dead horse.

In the real world, there's A LOT of people that need to get some sense slapped into them. Yes, this includes me sometimes. I'm not gonna pretend to be cool with someone I'd rather see beaten, because that's even worse than telling them to piss off.

But thanks for the lecture, dad. How's the weather on that pedestal? Warm I hope.

Good luck there sparky...I'm sure you're gonna go far with that attitude. Wonder why OTHER bands got to play but not you? Maybe its because you act like a d-bag who doesn't understand humility or basic human dignity.
Grow up, you get screwed on some gigs, it happens. you want the security of getting paid every time?

get a desk job and stop complaining, because you little bitch rant was so not Metal

lol, thanks for the praise dude. I' really here to tell a story, not to brag or vent. It was an interesting night and I thought I'd share.

The Crazy Donkey and every other place under the Club Loaded banner have gone to crap man. Nobody goes there for national acts and they still like to charge local bands to play. Luckily we're in the middle when it comes to pay-to-play venues: pay nothing, get nothing.

It was this placed called Oxygen, formerly Sundance, formerly The Edge, formerly Blue. Like I said earlier, it's nice and used to be a cool spot for band. It wasn't some crappy dive like I read a few dozen times in this thread....IT WAS A NICE PLACE!

I'm done with this thread. I enjoyed the constructive criticism/outright hate. I have a gig on Sunday, same place from this thread: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=708276&highlight=
Hopefully I DON'T have a story to tell this time :P

Funny story: when we booked the 2nd gig the guy said I had to bring my cabinet because "Someone broke it about a month ago" :hiding:

So quit implying that this is regular behavior from metal in general. It's really not, and you couldn't be more out of touch if you actually believe the stereotypes. Yes, the stereotypes are true occasionally, but you find egos and jerks in any genre. You also find nerds and geeks in any genre.

You don't like metal. We get it, but the genre has nothing to do with being a jerk. Being a jerk and getting wasted isn't "metal".

Guess you can't play the song either? Dude really??? Why are people defending the hack? Have you ever been booed? If not get out there cause its happens to everyone, sometimes its deserved.

Sure it was childish and rude for him to do that, but really? I have a hard time feeling sorry for the poor guy that did not learn the tune.

And Yes I am special :spit:
never even heard the song, and whether or not i can play it is irrelevant.....i tend not to hang around in places frequented by adolescents that would consider booing as a worth while way to express displeasure....i get why you don't feel sorry for the guy that got booed.....hopefully time and circumstance may inject a little much needed humility your way, when you discover that you are nowhere near good as you think you are.....

well to be fair the genre does tend to attract a lot of bad behavior....i've never understood how it is that music, which is an aural medium is better enjoyed by ignoring it in favor of mosh pits, crowd surfing, and stage dives....i find it odd that promoters have to beef up security to stage events......it would seem to imply that higher levels of bad behavior are expected at metal events....iirc i don't recall ever seeing a bouncer at a jazz or classical event....

let's face facts....metal shows have a reputation, and deservedly so.....and guys with attitudes like the op seem fine with it....at least until they witness it from the other side of the fence
