I've never been insecure enough to need a hat, special glove(s), sweatbands, makeup, band T-shirts (unless it's something akin to wearing a Spandau Ballet shirt to a thrash gig), hanging bandanas, platform shoes, or any other monkey business that really only gets in the way of playing.

Wearing hats while playing; yes or no?

The dreaded Nice Guy.
Often to be seen wearing a trilby (mistakenly calling it a fedora), they whine a lot about how unfair it is to be "friendzoned" by women - "I mean, I'm a nice guy. Why do they always go for such ********?" Said whining is typically followed by angry outbursts which reveal their chronic simmering anger at women, mostly stemming from a failure to regard women as actual people. They're generally fixated on a gamified idea of seduction, in which following a scripted sequence of Being Nice gets you rewarded with the cookie.
Yes it is part of my stage look for many years. Funny or not so funny, I have gone into places I play in without my hat and have not been recognized by owners and staff of club.
And you get all of this from the type of hat someone wears?.....

The point is not that wearing a trilby (or a fedora) makes you an *******. The point is that it's gotten associated with a type of ******* who (stereo)typically wears one, so it's a case of being tainted by association.
The question was "what is the connotation?" That's what it is.
I never really got into hats until the last few years now I really like them and I usually wear a hat when playing out.

I used to TRY to wear a hat, back in the day, but I always played so loud that the hat wouldn't stay on my head. Blew my pants off a few times as well. Now I've learned to turn down and I ALWAYS wear a hat, pulled down over my ears, to cover my hearing aids. What? Did somebody say something? 
I don't see any reason why you shouldn't. I'll wear a hat sometimes, and other times not. Hats are a good stage prop too, so long as you make it your own, not copying anyone in particular. Which reminds me... back in the day, May 16, 1984 I went to see the Thompson Twins at The Warfield in San Francisco, CA. When the Thompson Twins hit the stage, there was no visible bass player with them. Where was the bass player? He or she (I'll never know) was behind the band, and behind a large white screen. The bass player was wearing what looked like a suit, with a brimmed hat, and the backlighting projecting the bass player like a large shadow over the white screen reminiscent of Mr. Big on The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (see photo). It was great show and to this day I have know idea who the bass player was, but the bass player was nails!
I wear a fedora outside. It keeps my head warm in the cold. It keeps rain out of my eyes and off my neck so I don’t think someone is pi$$ing down my neck. I do not wear a cover indoors.Still claptrap....

It’s not the hat, it is a stigma attached to a subgroup of males that all seem to share the same personality traits, and also happen to idolize this hat as a trademark image of “class” and “swagger.” Typically these males are unattractive (almost always due to personal neglect,) socially inept, constantly craving female attention but unable to rationalize that female attention is not a commodity, but a human interaction, and almost always obsessed with anime, my little pony, or ninjas.
It’s unfortunate, but it actually exists, and now every time a fedora/trilby is seen, this stigma comes to mind.
Always! On stage it's a Fedora, Boater, Western, Panama; so long as it has a 3-inch minimum (prefer 4-5-inches) brim. I rarely even leave the house w/o one sort or another. Kind of a package thing; a hat, my grey hair hangs a bit more than a foot below my shoulders and I always wear shades. I often get crap for the shades; until they realize that I'm blind.
It does make me a little sad that people don’t wear hats and dress smartly anymore. I can’t remember the last time I saw a woman wearing a nice dress and not something that says “juicy” across their ass. I watch movies on TCM regularly and even the bad guys are wearing suits and fedoras. Of course those swarthy European bad guy types have bare heads
