The singer/guitarist of The Swingers, Phil Judd, was formerly the guitarists Split Enz (cited above by @Geepers above) . The bass player is Bones Hillman, who went on to join Midnight Oil.
Split Enz was possibly the biggest band in Oz and NZ in the late '70s and early '80s. Neil Finn, who replaced Phil Judd on guitar and became the band's second writer/vocalist, went on to form Crowded House. Percussionist Noel Crombie designed their eccentric outfits.

An obscure band. I've had the pleasure of seeing SCOTS play 2 times. Fantastic band! Mary Huff is a bass player 2die4! (I have about 4 of their albums.)
I was 11 when Counting The Beat came out. Part of it is being played on an American TV ad at the moment, so Phil will be smiling a bit I'd say. Didn't know that about Bones. I'm a big fan of Midnight Oil. I got 10, 9, 8... when they brought that out. One of my favourite albums. Every song is great.

Wellwater Conspiracy was a side project of Soundgarden's rhythm section, and kind of a Syd Barrett tribute.
More currently weird is Teezo Touchdown, who recently became not obscure enough to be name checked in Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us."

In the shop, I listen to a station called "Underground 80s" on SomaFM all day and it has introduced me to so many good songs and bands, if you're into that sort of 80s alternative. I could come up with a huge list, but I think one of the more obscure ones with a song that gets stuck in my head like glue would be "Raised by Snakes" by Telex:
Also, if you like crazy bass work and songs in 11, then "A Way You'll Never Be" by Leisure Process is a winner:

Oh, and while it's fair to say that Danny Elfman is FAR from "obscure," he is very WEIRD and his solo stuff is awesome. "Tough As Nails" has a killer bassline.

Aurora Aksness is a 30 year old Norwegian singer/songwriter/producer. She has a good voice and writes odd tunes which are either awful or beautiful depending on your tastes.
